Ahrefs vs Semrush (2026): Which SEO Tool Is Worth It?

Ahrefs vs Semrush in 2026: Ahrefs Lite is $129/mo in confirmed USD, Semrush's four plans price by region and did not render a dollar figure today.

Ahrefs is the one you can price in dollars today. Lite runs $129/mo, confirmed in USD on Ahrefs' own pricing page this morning. Semrush's four self-serve plans, SEO, Starter, Pro+ and Advanced, price by region, and on repeated checks today the page never rendered a dollar figure, only euros. That single fact should shape your evaluation before you compare a single feature.

Ahrefs' numbers below came from Ahrefs' pricing page, read in USD on 25 September 2026, the same figures our own Ahrefs pricing breakdown verified the same day. Semrush's pricing page was checked four separate times today, including with a currency parameter and a US country flag, and every attempt returned euro prices. We are not converting those euros for you and we are not guessing at a US list price that Semrush has not published where a buyer can read it.

Toolradar data: Toolradar, the software directory we run, tracked 245 SEO tools in its live ranking, updated September 2026. Semrush sits in the top 10 of that ranking; Ahrefs lands in the honorable mentions. The full shelf is the best SEO tools guide, with directory profiles for Ahrefs and Semrush, plus a dedicated Ahrefs pricing page on the same domain.

Ahrefs bundles one user into Lite, Standard and Advanced (three come with Enterprise) and lists an exact per-seat add-on for each plan. Semrush mentions an additional-users add-on on its pricing page but, like the plan prices themselves, that add-on figure only rendered in euros on every check we ran today, so we are not printing a number for it here either. Toolradar's own Semrush pricing page tracks the same tiers from a software-buyer angle if you want a second read on plan structure.

Why one price shows in dollars and the other does not

Ahrefs' pricing page rendered $129, $249, $449 and $1,499 as plain dollar figures on a direct fetch today, and the per-seat add-ons on the same page (Lite at $40, Standard at $60, Advanced at $80) also showed as dollars without needing a currency switch. Semrush's pricing page behaved differently on every one of four attempts: a direct fetch, a fetch with a ?currency=usd query string, a fetch with a US country parameter, and a fetch through a second reading service. All four returned the same euro figures, and none showed a dollar sign next to a paid plan.

That is not proof Semrush charges US customers in euros at checkout. It means the public pricing page, the one a buyer actually reads before signing up, did not confirm a US list price today. Per our sourcing rule, an unconfirmed figure does not go on this page as a number, in any currency. If you are budgeting in dollars, go to Semrush's own pricing page from a US connection or ask their sales team for the exact figure rather than trusting a euro-to-dollar conversion, since list prices and exchange-rate conversions are rarely identical.

What the seat and usage limits actually mean

A tracked keyword and a monitored website cap different things, and mixing them up understates one tool's real ceiling. Ahrefs counts tracked keywords per plan (750 on Lite up to 5,000 on Advanced) and separately caps crawl credits, the fuel for Site Audit and Site Explorer lookups, at 100,000 on Lite rising to 1,500,000 on Advanced. Semrush instead caps the number of websites you can monitor (5 on SEO and Starter, 15 on Pro+, 40 on Advanced) and the keywords tracked daily within those sites, so a Semrush buyer with 20 domains hits the website cap long before either vendor's keyword count becomes the binding constraint.

Both vendors now fold AI visibility tracking into their base plans instead of selling it as a bolt-on. Ahrefs' Brand Radar ships 5 tracked AI prompts on Lite, climbing to 20 on Advanced. Semrush's AI Visibility layer starts at 50 tracked prompts a day on Starter and reaches 200 a day on Advanced, a materially wider allowance if a large chunk of your work is watching how ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini describe your brand rather than classic keyword rank tracking. Neither AI-prompt allowance is priced separately from the base plan on either vendor's page today.

Free plans and what a trial actually shows you

Ahrefs' full product, Lite through Enterprise, has no free tier; it offers Ahrefs Free instead, a separate limited product with restricted access to Site Explorer and Site Audit. Semrush's Free plan includes one demo project and caps you at 10 reports a day, enough to poke at the interface but not to run a real audit. Neither company's entry point replaces a paid plan for daily use, and both effectively push a serious evaluation toward a paid trial or a sales conversation rather than a no-card free account.

If your evaluation criterion is "can I actually test the product before paying," neither vendor makes that easy from the public pricing page alone. Check each vendor's own signup flow for the current trial terms before you commit a credit card, since trial length and card requirements are the kind of detail that changes without a pricing-page update.

Ahrefs vs Semrush against the rest of the field

Neither tool is the only serious option, and a team choosing between them is usually also weighing Moz Pro, SE Ranking and SpyFu. Our Ahrefs pricing breakdown runs that four-way comparison in detail, with a small team's real monthly bill on each platform rather than the single-seat headline price. If AI visibility and brand monitoring, not classic backlink data, is the feature actually driving your decision, our brand monitoring tools roundup and GEO and AI search optimization roundup cover standalone products built for exactly that job at a lower entry price than either Ahrefs or Semrush.

Content teams weighing Semrush's content optimization features against a dedicated product should also see our content optimization tools roundup, since Semrush bundles that feature into Pro+ rather than selling it alone. Our longer Semrush review covers what each of its four tiers includes beyond the pricing question this page focuses on, and our best AI SEO tools roundup is the wider category view if you have not narrowed to these two names yet. Toolradar's own best AI brand monitoring tools guide is the deeper read if the AI Visibility and Brand Radar features above are the actual deciding factor, and stacking either tool into a weekly workflow is a question our AI marketing workflows piece covers in general terms.

Who should pick which

Pick Ahrefs when a confirmed dollar figure matters to your budgeting process and you want crawl credits and keyword tracking as the two dials you turn as you grow. Its entry plan fits a solo operator or a single site; Standard at $249/mo is the jump most in-house teams make once a second site or two years of historical data matters; Advanced at $449/mo is built for agencies managing up to 50 projects.

Pick Semrush when your work spans SEO, AI visibility, and multi-market monitoring in one login, and you are comfortable getting the exact US price from Semrush directly rather than off the public page. Starter's 50 daily AI prompts and MCP access suit a small team just adding AI-search monitoring to existing SEO work; Advanced's 200 daily prompts, 40 monitored websites and share-of-voice reporting fit a larger team running that program across several brands or markets.

Pick neither when the real requirement is backlink data alone at a lower price, which is the gap Moz Pro and SpyFu were built to fill, covered in the four-way comparison inside our Ahrefs pricing breakdown. Toolradar runs its own Ahrefs vs Semrush comparison with a software-buyer angle on the same two tools, its Ahrefs alternatives list if neither fits your budget, and our full software review library covers every other SEO and marketing product we have priced.

How we verified this

Ahrefs figures came from Ahrefs' pricing page, fetched twice today, 25 September 2026, once directly and once with a USD currency parameter; both fetches returned the same dollar amounts. Semrush figures came from Semrush's pricing page, fetched four times today through two different reading methods and two different currency and country parameters; every fetch returned euros, so no Semrush dollar price appears on this page. The Toolradar figure (245 SEO tools tracked) came from Toolradar's live SEO tools ranking, last updated September 2026.

Nobody paid for placement on this page. This is a pricing and plan-structure comparison, not a hands-on crawl-depth test of either product. Louis Corneloup, founder of Toolradar and Dupple, edited the verdict. Re-check both vendors' pricing pages before you buy, since Semrush's page may render differently depending on where you are browsing from, and both companies change limits without notice.

FAQ

Is Ahrefs or Semrush cheaper in 2026?

Ahrefs is the one with a confirmed US dollar price: Lite is $129/mo, Standard is $249/mo, Advanced is $449/mo, and Enterprise starts at $1,499/mo on an annual contract. Semrush's SEO, Starter, Pro+ and Advanced plans price by region, and on four separate checks today the pricing page only rendered euro figures, never dollars, so its confirmed US list price is not available from the public page.

Why doesn't Semrush show a dollar price?

Semrush's pricing page appears to geo-price by the visitor's location or IP address rather than by an explicit currency toggle you can force from outside the US. We tried a direct fetch, a ?currency=usd query string, a US country parameter, and a second fetching method, and all four attempts returned euros. That is a limitation of what the public page shows today, not a claim about what Semrush actually charges US customers at checkout.

What does Ahrefs Lite include?

Ahrefs Lite, the tier named in the table above, covers 1 user, 5 projects, 750 tracked keywords, 100,000 monthly crawl credits, 6 months of historical data and 5 tracked AI prompts through Brand Radar. Extra users cost $40/mo each, capped at two additional seats on this plan.

What does Semrush's cheapest AI-inclusive plan include?

Semrush's Starter plan bundles SEO (5 websites monitored, 500 keywords tracked daily, MCP access) with AI Visibility (50 prompts tracked daily, 1 domain for AI brand performance, 300 AI visibility reports a day). Its confirmed USD monthly price was not available on the pages we checked today.

Which tool tracks more AI search visibility?

Semrush's AI Visibility allowance runs wider on paper: 50 tracked prompts a day on Starter up to 200 a day on Advanced. Ahrefs' Brand Radar starts at 5 tracked AI prompts on Lite and reaches 20 on Advanced. A team whose main job is watching brand mentions across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini gets a larger built-in allowance from Semrush's plans before either vendor sells a separate add-on package.

Do either Ahrefs or Semrush have a real free plan?

Neither offers a full free version of its main product. Ahrefs Free is a separate, limited product with restricted Site Explorer and Site Audit access, not a free tier of Lite, Standard, Advanced or Enterprise. Semrush's Free plan caps you at one demo project and 10 reports a day. Both push a genuine evaluation toward a paid trial rather than an ongoing free account.

Is Ahrefs or Semrush better for an agency?

Ahrefs Advanced is built for agency use with 50 projects and five years of historical data, the depth needed to report long-term results across multiple client accounts, at a confirmed $449/mo. Semrush Advanced covers 40 monitored websites and 5,000 daily tracked keywords with share-of-voice reporting across markets, but its confirmed US price was not available on the pages we checked today, so an agency comparing the two on cost alone needs Semrush's exact figure from Semrush directly.
