Semrush Review 2026

What Semrush actually costs now that AI Search visibility is bundled into the SEO plan, where the entry tier stops being enough, and when Ahrefs, SE Ranking, Moz Pro or SpyFu is the smarter invoice.

Product links may be affiliate links. How we rate 4 alternatives covered
TL;DR

Semrush earns its price once AI Search visibility matters as much as classic keyword rankings, and the real cost starts at $199 a month for the AI-bundled Starter tier, or less for the SEO plan, which has basic AI visibility reports but no prompt tracking. Pro+ and Advanced scale up to $549 a month, and a permanent free plan plus a 7-day trial on paid tiers let you test the toolkit first.

The catch is the price gap. SE Ranking and SpyFu cover similar rank tracking for noticeably less than Semrush, and Ahrefs beats it on raw keyword and backlink depth at a comparable price. Pay for Semrush when AI Search tracking and the all-in-one toolkit save you from buying two separate products.

Key facts

  • Updated: September 24, 2026
  • Best for: Marketing teams that want one login for keyword research, content, competitor tracking and AI search visibility.
  • Price as of September 24, 2026: SEO is $139.95/mo; Starter (adds AI Search) is $199/mo, $165/mo billed yearly. Free plan and 7-day trial.
  • The all-in-one SEO suite that now bundles AI Search visibility into every paid plan from Starter up.
  • Entry paid plan: $139.95/mo (SEO plan)
  • Free plan: Yes, $0/mo, plus 7-day trial
  • AI Search prompts: 50 to 200/day by plan
  • Toolradar rating: 4.5/5 across 6,361 reviews

Pros

  • The Starter plan folds AI Search tracking, daily AI prompts and MCP access into the same seat that used to be SEO-only, for one extra invoice line, not two.
  • Advanced tracks 5,000 keywords across 40 sites with API access and Share of Voice reporting, more scope than SE Ranking's Growth plan.
  • A genuine $0/mo Free plan, 1 demo project and 10 reports a day, exists to test the interface before the 7-day trial on paid tiers.

Cons

  • The entry SEO plan runs roughly four to five times SE Ranking's or SpyFu's starting price for a comparable keyword count.
  • Extra seats cost from $45/mo per user, rising with the plan tier, so a three-person team adds a real line item.
  • AI Search tracking caps at 50 prompts a day on Starter and only 100 to 200 on Pro+ and Advanced, thin next to a dedicated AI-visibility tool.

Semrush has been the default answer to what tool for SEO for over a decade, and in 2026 it sells something new: AI Search visibility bolted onto the same rank tracker marketers already know.

The pricing question is not whether Semrush works.

It does.

The question is whether the entry-level SEO plan, or the AI-bundled Starter tier above it, buys enough more than SE Ranking or SpyFu to justify roughly triple the invoice.

The September 2026 SEO tools ranking on Toolradar, the software directory we run, is the scope check: Toolradar data: 243 SEO tools evaluated, with Semrush listed in that directory at a 4.5-star aggregate across 6,361 reviews.

Every dollar figure below was read on Semrush's own pages in September 2026.

Semrush's live pricing page rendered in euros from where we checked it, so the dollar prices here come from Semrush's own blog and help-center pages instead of guessing at a conversion.

The comparison set is Ahrefs (directory profile), SE Ranking (directory profile), Moz Pro (directory profile), and SpyFu (directory profile).

Methodology: five vendor pricing pages read in September 2026, scored on keyword and site caps, AI Search inclusion, free plan or trial terms, and per-seat add-on cost. No one paid for placement.

This is a pricing read, not a lab test of the keyword research workflow.

For a full head-to-head on data depth, see the SE Ranking vs Semrush comparison on Toolradar.

What is Semrush?

Semrush is an all-in-one marketing platform built around keyword research, rank tracking, competitor analysis, content optimization and, since 2026, AI Search visibility tracking across ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity and Google AI Mode.

The 2026 restructure folds what used to be a separate AI-visibility add-on into the core plans. Every paid tier from Starter up tracks a set number of AI prompts a day and reports on brand sentiment inside those answers, next to the classic keyword and backlink tools.

Four self-serve tiers sit on one pricing page: SEO (rank tracking and research only, no AI Search), Starter, Pro+ and Advanced, each adding more websites, keywords and AI prompts, plus a custom Enterprise tier for multi-brand organizations.

A permanent free plan and a 7-day trial on paid tiers let a buyer poke around before paying. The product record and 6,361 aggregated reviews sit on Toolradar.

How Semrush works

Day to day, a marketer opens Position Tracking to watch daily keyword rank changes, then pivots to the Keyword Magic Tool or the content optimization suite to find gaps and brief writers.

Site Audit runs a technical crawl and scores fixes by impact, so a content or growth generalist does not need a dedicated technical SEO hire to find the broken redirects and thin pages dragging rankings down.

AI Search tracking works differently.

Instead of crawling Google, it runs a set number of prompts a day (50 on Starter, 100 on Pro+, 200 on Advanced) through the tracked AI assistants and logs whether and how a brand gets mentioned, plus a sentiment read.

That prompt cap is the real limit on the AI side: a team running its own 30 to 80 category questions across several assistants burns through Starter's 50-prompt allowance fast.

MCP access, included from Starter up, lets a team query Semrush data straight from an AI assistant instead of exporting a CSV, a workflow shortcut none of the four alternatives below publish yet.

The research and writing workflow around a page like this one sits in content marketing tools and on-page optimization software.

Semrush key features

Bundled AI Search visibility trackingEssential
Every paid plan from Starter up tracks a set number of daily AI prompts across ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity and Google AI Mode, and reports brand sentiment inside those answers, a category most tools in this set sell as an add-on or skip entirely.
Four-tier ladder priced on sites and keywordsEssential
SEO, Starter, Pro+ and Advanced step up website and keyword caps together, from 5 sites and 500 keywords to 40 sites and 5,000 keywords, so a growing team upgrades the whole toolkit at once rather than paying for limits one at a time.
Position Tracking and Site Audit
Daily rank tracking by device and location plus a technical crawl that scores fixes by impact, the two tools a marketer opens most days without needing a dedicated technical SEO hire.
Content optimization and keyword cannibalization
Pro+ and up add on-page content scoring against top-ranking pages and flag when multiple pages on a site compete for the same keyword, useful once a content team is publishing at volume.
MCP access from Starter up
Lets a connected AI assistant query Semrush data directly instead of a manual CSV export, included from the Starter tier up; SE Ranking also lists MCP access on its plans.
Per-seat add-on pricing
Additional users cost from $45 a month each, rising with the plan tier, so a three-person team adds a real line item before counting reporting or lead-gen add-ons.

Semrush pricing

Semrush's own pricing page rendered in euros from where we checked it in September 2026 (SEO at 112.52 euros a month billed yearly, Starter at 158.40, Pro+ at 238, Advanced at 436.99), so the dollar figures on this page come from Semrush's own blog and knowledge-base pages instead: the SEO, Starter, Pro+ and Advanced tiers step up together, each billed monthly unless noted (the table below has the exact figure for each).

Additional users cost from $45/mo, rising with the plan tier. Enterprise is a custom quote.

Ahrefs prices close to Semrush at the top, see the table below for the exact tier prices, with a lighter checker-only Starter plan beneath the main ladder, plus a permanent free tier for verified site owners.

Its Enterprise starts at $1,499/mo with an annual commitment, the steepest jump in this set.

SE Ranking and SpyFu undercut Semrush by more than half. SE Ranking's Core and Growth plans (see the table below) both sit behind a 14-day no-card trial.

SpyFu's Basic plan drops well below Semrush's entry price on annual billing, Pro + AI is $89/mo annual ($119 monthly, $59 the first month), and Team/Agency rounds out that ladder, all backed by a 30-day money-back guarantee instead of a trial.

Moz Pro sits closer to Semrush on price but smaller on scope: Standard covers only 300 keywords and one site, Medium is $143/mo annual ($179 monthly), and Large tops that ladder at $239/mo annual, with a cheaper Starter plan below Standard.

Semrush pros and cons

What we like

  • The Starter plan folds AI Search tracking, daily AI prompts and MCP access into the same seat that used to be SEO-only, for one extra invoice line, not two.
  • Advanced tracks 5,000 keywords across 40 sites with API access and Share of Voice reporting, more scope than SE Ranking's Growth plan.
  • A genuine $0/mo Free plan, 1 demo project and 10 reports a day, exists to test the interface before the 7-day trial on paid tiers.

What could be better

  • The entry SEO plan runs roughly four to five times SE Ranking's or SpyFu's starting price for a comparable keyword count.
  • Extra seats cost from $45/mo per user, rising with the plan tier, so a three-person team adds a real line item.
  • AI Search tracking caps at 50 prompts a day on Starter and only 100 to 200 on Pro+ and Advanced, thin next to a dedicated AI-visibility tool.

Who Semrush is for

Semrush fits a marketing, growth or content team that wants classic rank tracking and AI Search visibility in one login, and that will use enough of the toolkit, content optimization, multi-location tracking, API access, to justify the monthly seat.

It also fits an agency managing several client sites that needs Share of Voice and multi-brand reporting on Advanced.

Skip it if all you need is rank tracking and a technical audit: SE Ranking's Core plan or SpyFu's Basic plan cover that job for a fraction of Semrush's entry price.

Skip it too if raw keyword and backlink data matters more than AI Search, Ahrefs prices close to Semrush and wins on index depth.

Moz Pro is the pick for a solo marketer or small team that wants a simpler dashboard and does not need Semrush's website or keyword ceiling.

For AI-visibility tracking as the primary job rather than a bundled feature, see the Peec AI review; for the content-optimization layer Semrush's Pro+ tier covers thinly, see content optimization tools.

The bottom line

Buy Semrush's Starter plan when AI Search visibility and classic rank tracking need to live in the same login, or the annual rate if you can commit for a year.

Buy Pro+ at $299/mo once you need content optimization and cannibalization checks across 15 sites, and Advanced once API access and Share of Voice across 40 sites matter.

SE Ranking is the buy when the budget is tighter than Semrush's Starter and AI prompt tracking still needs to be in the plan.

SpyFu is the buy when unlimited exports and a 30-day refund matter more than AI Search. Ahrefs is the buy when keyword and backlink depth outweighs AI visibility.

Moz Pro is the buy for a smaller site count and a simpler dashboard.

Content and workflow tooling sits outside all five: see content marketing tools, on-page optimization software, and AI-visibility monitors.

Frequently asked questions

Is Semrush worth it in 2026?
Yes for a marketing or growth team that wants classic rank tracking and AI Search visibility bundled into one login and will use enough of the toolkit to justify the price. The Starter plan is the entry point that includes AI prompt tracking; the cheaper SEO plan below it has basic AI visibility reports but no prompt tracking. Skip it if a cheaper, narrower tool like SE Ranking or SpyFu already covers the job.
How much does Semrush cost?
SEO is $139.95 a month, with basic AI visibility reports but no prompt tracking. Starter is $199 a month, or $165 a month billed yearly, and adds 50 AI prompts a day. Pro+ is the next tier up, for 100 prompts and 15 sites, and Advanced is $549 a month for 200 prompts, 40 sites and API access. A permanent free plan and a 7-day trial exist to test the platform first. Semrush's own pricing page rendered in euros from where we checked it in September 2026; these dollar figures come from Semrush's own blog and help-center pages.
Does Semrush have a free plan?
Yes, a permanent Free plan at $0 a month with one demo project and 10 reports a day across the toolkit, no credit card required. Paid plans add a 7-day trial on top. Ahrefs and Moz Pro also offer free options, Ahrefs Free for verified site owners and no permanent free tier on Moz, while SE Ranking and SpyFu run trial periods or a money-back guarantee instead.
What are the best Semrush alternatives?
SE Ranking covers similar rank tracking and AI prompt monitoring at a lower list price than Semrush's Starter, though its pricing page showed euros only from our check. SpyFu's Basic plan billed yearly undercuts that further, with unlimited search exports and a 30-day refund window. Ahrefs prices close to Semrush but wins on keyword and backlink index depth. Moz Pro is the simpler dashboard for a smaller site count, from $79 a month billed yearly.
Semrush vs Ahrefs, which is the better buy?
Ahrefs' Standard plan has a deeper backlink and keyword index and 500,000 monthly crawl credits, but it does not bundle AI Search visibility the way Semrush's Starter and up do. Pick Semrush when AI-answer tracking has to live in the SEO tool; pick Ahrefs when raw data depth for technical and backlink work matters more. The two price within roughly the same range once seats and add-ons are counted.
Does Semrush's price include AI Search tracking?
Only from Starter up. The entry SEO plan adds AI visibility reports and sentiment monitoring but no dedicated prompt tracking. Starter adds 50 AI prompts a day, Pro+ 100, and Advanced 200, each tracking brand mentions and sentiment across ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity and Google AI Mode. A team running more prompts than Starter's 50-a-day cap across several assistants will need Pro+ or a dedicated AI-visibility tool.
