Surfer SEO vs Frase 2026: Content Scoring vs Brief Speed, Priced

Surfer SEO vs Frase in 2026: Frase Starter is $39 a month billed yearly, Surfer Standard $99. Limits, overages and the yearly bill for a solo, a team and an agency.

Surfer SEO vs Frase 2026: Content Scoring vs Brief Speed, Priced

Frase is the cheaper content optimization tool for a solo writer and for an agency; Surfer is cheaper, by a whisker, for a three-person team that writes about 30 articles a month. Frase Starter costs $39 a month billed yearly, Surfer Standard $99, and at the top Frase Scale costs $720 a year less than Surfer Peace of Mind. Prices read on both vendors' pricing pages on October 26, 2026.

The two tools meter different things. Surfer counts documents, team seats, tracked pages and AI prompts, and on annual billing hands you the year's documents in one batch. Frase counts articles, audit pages and seats per month, and lets you switch on pay-as-you-go above the cap on its two middle plans. Which meter fits your output decides the bill more than the sticker does.

Toolradar data: Toolradar, the software directory we run, tracks 282 SEO tools as of October 25, 2026, with a median cheapest paid plan of $30.12 a month across the 110 that publish a price; Surfer is the fourth most-listed alternative in that category, which is why so many buyers price it against Frase (Surfer SEO, Frase, SEO tools ranking). For each tool on its own, see Surfer SEO pricing, the Surfer SEO review and the Frase review on this site.

Both vendors lead with yearly billing on their pages, so the comparisons below put yearly next to yearly first. Surfer prints its yearly per-month rates in USD and the saving against monthly billing for each plan; its monthly rates of $119, $219 and $359 for Standard, Pro and Peace of Mind come from the price data the page's billing toggle renders from. Frase prints both rates on each card.

What each plan costs and allows

Plan Yearly billing, per month Monthly billing Seats Writing allowance Pages or audits AI prompts tracked
Surfer Discovery $49 Sold yearly on the page 1 120 documents 10 tracked pages None
Surfer Standard $99 $119 3 360 documents 50 tracked pages 25, weekly refresh
Surfer Pro $182 $219 5 360 documents 200 tracked pages 50, daily refresh
Surfer Peace of Mind $299 $359 10 Unlimited, fair use 500 tracked pages 100, daily refresh
Surfer AI Search Analytics $82 $95 5 None, tracker only None 50, daily refresh
Frase Starter $39 $49 1, 1 site 10 articles a month 50 audit pages a month 20
Frase Professional $103 $129 3, 5 sites 40 articles a month 250 audit pages a month 50
Frase Scale $239 $299 5, 10 domains 100 articles a month 1,000 audit pages a month 75

Surfer's document allowance is the number to read twice. The pricing page shows 360 documents on Standard and Pro and 120 on Discovery, and Surfer's plan guide explains that annual billing grants limits in a single yearly batch while monthly billing resets them each month with no rollover. Taken as a yearly batch, 360 documents is 30 a month on average, which is our arithmetic, and the difference between Standard and Pro is pages, prompts and seats, not writing volume, per Surfer's pricing page.

Frase's allowance is monthly and explicit: 10, 40 or 100 articles, with 50, 250 or 1,000 audit pages beside them, per Frase's pricing page. Professional and Scale add seats at $29 a month each, and their optional pay-as-you-go runs $5 per extra article, $0.50 per audit page and $0.25 per AI prompt on Professional, or $4, $0.40 and $0.20 on Scale, billed at the end of the cycle only if you switch it on. Starter stops at its limit, which Frase presents as a feature: no surprise bill.

What a year costs for three team shapes

The totals multiply each vendor's yearly per-month rate by twelve and are our arithmetic. They assume the plan that fits the seats and the writing volume, since seats and documents are the caps that force an upgrade on both tools.

Team shape Surfer plan Surfer a year Frase plan Frase a year Cheaper
Solo writer, about 10 articles a month, one site Discovery $588 Starter $468 Frase by $120
Three writers, about 30 articles a month, 50 pages watched Standard $1,188 Professional $1,236 Surfer by $48
Agency, 5 seats, 10 client sites, about 100 articles a month Peace of Mind, because Pro stops at 360 documents $3,588 Scale $2,868 Frase by $720
Same agency on monthly billing Peace of Mind $4,308 Scale $3,588 Frase, same gap

The middle row is the only one Surfer wins, and it wins it on documents. Standard's 360 documents cover a three-person team writing 30 pieces a month for the price of Frase Professional, which caps at 40 articles but charges $48 more a year; a team writing 35 a month flips the result, because Surfer's batch runs out in the eleventh month while Frase has room. At the top the gap is Surfer's own ladder: Pro keeps the same 360 documents as Standard and adds pages and prompts, so an agency that writes 100 articles a month has to buy Peace of Mind for the unlimited allowance, at $720 a year more than Frase Scale on either billing cycle.

Seats push the same way. Surfer sells no per-seat add-on on its pricing page, so a fourth writer on Standard means Pro at $182 a month, a jump of $996 a year, while a fourth seat on Frase Professional is $29 a month, or $348 a year. A team of seven on Frase Scale pays two extra seats, $696 a year on top of $2,868; the same seven on Surfer need Peace of Mind.

Content scoring against brief speed

Surfer's pricing page sells the editor: a Content Score, real-time AI SEO guidelines built from what ranks, a SERP analyzer, 1-click content optimization and internal linking, a plagiarism checker and an AI writing assistant it calls Surfy, with a topical map and keyword research around them. Every AI SEO plan includes those; what you pay more for is tracked pages, daily rather than weekly AI prompt refreshes, brand workspaces and, on Peace of Mind, API access. The workflow Surfer describes is write or paste, score, fix, and the score is the product.

Frase's pricing page sells the loop: research that ends in a brief, an AI agent that drafts in your brand voice, SEO and GEO scores on the draft, publishing straight to WordPress, Webflow, Sanity, Wix or its own FraseCMS, and Content Guard, which watches published pages for Google decay and writes the fix for your approval. The agent can publish on its own from the first plan when you allow it. What you pay more for is volume, sites, seats, more AI engines in visibility tracking and longer reporting history. The brief and the draft are the product; the score is a step inside it.

For a buyer, that difference is practical. A writer who drafts elsewhere and wants a grade before publishing gets more from Surfer's editor and its 50 to 500 tracked pages. A small team that wants the research, the brief and a first draft produced for them, then monitored after publishing, gets more from Frase's article allowance and Content Guard. Our best content optimization tools roundup and the best AI SEO tools guide place both inside the wider field, and Surfer SEO vs Clearscope compares Surfer with the other scoring-first tool.

AI visibility, trials and the small print

Both tools now track whether AI engines cite you. Surfer tracks 25 prompts refreshed weekly on Standard, 50 daily on Pro and 100 daily on Peace of Mind, across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, AI Overviews and Gemini on the AI SEO plans, and sells a tracker-only plan, AI Search Analytics, at $82 a month billed yearly with 50 prompts and 5 seats. Frase tracks 20 prompts on Starter across ChatGPT and Google AI, 50 on Professional with Perplexity added, and 75 on Scale with Claude and Gemini added, and keeps 30 days of visibility history on Starter.

The trials differ in a way that costs money if you forget. Surfer's 7-day trial gives new accounts the Pro plan, asks for a card at checkout and converts to the plan you picked unless you cancel first, per its trial article. Frase's 7-day trial gives Professional's feature set, capped at 5 articles, 50 audit pages, 25 prompts and 3 seats, with no card. Surfer bills in USD or EUR and adds VAT for UK and EU customers; Frase prints USD. Both prorate upgrades immediately and apply downgrades at the next billing date, and Frase takes 20% off the monthly rate on yearly billing, while Surfer's pricing FAQ puts its yearly discount at up to 17%.

Who should pick which

Pick Frase if you write alone, if you run an agency with five or more seats and many sites, or if you want the tool to produce the brief and the draft rather than grade yours. Starter is the cheapest entry on either side, and Scale beats Surfer's unlimited plan by a clear margin with pay-as-you-go you can leave off.

Pick Surfer if you are a team of two or three writing around 30 articles a month and you want the editor's score, SERP analysis and tracked-page audits in one place: Standard at $99 a month billed yearly edges Frase Professional. Budget the next plan, not a seat, when the team grows, and read the document batch as a yearly pool if you bill annually. If your main need is tracking rather than writing, Surfer's AI Search Analytics plan is the cheaper way in, and the best free SEO audit tools roundup covers the audit side without a subscription. Teams choosing a broader stack should read Ahrefs vs Semrush first, since neither Surfer nor Frase replaces a rank tracker or a backlink index, and best tools for content marketers lists what sits around them.

How we compared

Prices were read on Surfer's pricing page, its pricing FAQ, plan guide and trial article, and on Frase's pricing page, on October 26, 2026. Surfer's monthly rates for Standard, Pro and Peace of Mind are the figures its pricing page's billing toggle renders from; the yearly totals, the per-month reading of Surfer's document batch and the seat examples are our arithmetic on the printed prices, excluding tax. The Toolradar figures come from its live SEO tools data that week. This page reports published prices and documented features only and carries no sponsored placement.
