Surfer SEO vs Clearscope 2026: Which Content Tool Wins?
Surfer SEO vs Clearscope in 2026: Surfer Standard is $99/mo billed yearly for 3 seats, Clearscope Essentials $129/mo with unlimited users. Team costs compared.

Surfer wins for most teams of one to five writers; Clearscope wins once headcount outgrows the pages you track. Surfer Standard costs $99 a month billed yearly for 3 seats and 50 tracked pages. Clearscope Essentials costs $129 a month for the same 50 pages, but with unlimited users. At 10 writers, Clearscope is the cheaper bill by $2,040 a year.
That headcount split is the whole decision for most buyers. Both tools grade a draft against what ranks and both now track how ChatGPT and Gemini mention your brand, so the feature overlap is wide. What differs is the meter: Surfer prices by seats, documents and pages, while Clearscope prices by tracked pages and queries and never counts people.
Prices below were read on Surfer's pricing page and Clearscope's pricing page on 18 October 2026. Yearly totals and per-seat figures are our arithmetic on those prices.

Toolradar data: in the alternatives graph of Toolradar, the software directory we run, Surfer is listed as an alternative to 51 other tools and Clearscope to 44, as of October 2026. Buyers cross-shop the two constantly, which is why the pricing meter, not the feature list, usually settles it. Toolradar's Clearscope vs Surfer SEO data comparison lays the two side by side from a software-buyer angle.
What does Surfer cost in 2026?
Surfer sells four writing plans plus a tracker-only plan, each with a lower rate when you pay for the year up front. The table lists what each plan includes on the pricing page.
| Surfer plan | Billed yearly | Billed monthly | Seats | Tracked pages | AI prompts tracked |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Discovery | $49/mo | $59/mo | 1 | 10 | None |
| Standard | $99/mo | $119/mo | 3 | 50 | 25, refreshed weekly, ChatGPT only |
| Pro | $182/mo | $219/mo | 5 | 200 | 50, refreshed daily, all tracked models |
| Peace of Mind | $299/mo | $359/mo | 10 | 500 | 100, refreshed daily |
| Enterprise | Custom | Not offered | Custom | Custom | Custom |
The document allowance is the other meter. Discovery lets you create or optimize 120 documents, Standard and Pro 360, and Peace of Mind is unlimited under a fair usage policy. Surfer's help center says an annual plan receives the whole year's allowance in one batch and that unused allowance does not roll over, so a team that front-loads a content push in January gets more from yearly billing than one that writes evenly.
The yearly rate saves real money. On Standard it is $1,188 a year against $1,428 billed monthly, a $240 difference, and on Peace of Mind the gap reaches $720. Surfer's pricing FAQ puts the annual discount at up to 17 percent.
Surfer also sells AI Search Analytics, a tracker-only plan from $82 a month billed yearly with 5 seats and 50 prompts refreshed daily. It writes nothing, so it only fits a team that already has an editor and wants brand-mention tracking alone. For the wider field of trackers, see our AI visibility tools pricing breakdown.
What does Clearscope cost in 2026?
Clearscope publishes two self-serve prices, both billed monthly with no minimum contract. Its pricing FAQ says a card covers any plan and that invoices are only for yearly custom plans.
| Clearscope plan | Price | Users | Tracked pages and queries | Monthly drafts | Monthly topic explorations |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Essentials | $129/mo | Unlimited | 50 pages, 50 queries | 20 | 20 |
| Business | $399/mo | Unlimited | 300 pages, 300 queries | 20 | 50 |
| Enterprise | Custom | Unlimited | Custom | Custom | Custom |
Business adds a dedicated account manager, and Enterprise adds custom credits, crawler whitelisting and single sign-on. Extra pages and extra drafts are sold as add-ons on top of each plan, with page add-ons listed from $25 a month on Essentials and $15 on Business, and drafts at $50 and $20.
There is no yearly discount to claim, so the sticker price is what you pay. A year of Essentials comes to $1,548 and a year of Business to $4,788. Note what the jump to Business does not buy: the draft allowance stays at 20 a month on both plans, so a team paying for Business is paying for monitoring capacity, not output.
The bill by team shape
This is the comparison we built. For each team shape we picked the cheapest base plan on each side that covers both the writers and the tracked pages, billed the cheapest way each vendor allows (yearly for Surfer, monthly for Clearscope).
| Team | Surfer plan, per year | Clearscope plan, per year | Cheaper by |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 writer, 10 pages | Discovery, $588 | Essentials, $1,548 | Surfer, $960 |
| 3 writers, 50 pages | Standard, $1,188 | Essentials, $1,548 | Surfer, $360 |
| 5 writers, 200 pages | Pro, $2,184 | Business, $4,788 | Surfer, $2,604 |
| 10 writers, 50 pages | Peace of Mind, $3,588 | Essentials, $1,548 | Clearscope, $2,040 |
| 15 writers, 300 pages | Enterprise, custom quote | Business, $4,788 | Clearscope publishes a price; Surfer does not |
Three mechanics explain why the winner changes with team shape. First, Surfer's seat caps force a plan jump long before its page limits do: a fourth writer moves you from Standard to Pro even if you track 20 pages. Second, Clearscope's unlimited users make it nearly flat as the team grows: Essentials works out to $12.90 a user each month with 10 users, against $29.90 a seat on Surfer's top self-serve plan. Third, past 10 writers Surfer has no published price at all.
The 5-writer row deserves a caveat. Clearscope could cover 200 pages with Essentials plus page add-ons instead of Business, which would narrow that $2,604 gap. The add-on unit is set by a slider on Clearscope's pricing page, so price your exact page count there before you rule it out.
Per tracked page, the picture flips toward Surfer at volume. Surfer Pro works out to $0.91 per tracked page each month and Peace of Mind to $0.60, while Clearscope Business works out to $1.33. A team monitoring hundreds of URLs with a small crew gets more pages per dollar from Surfer.
Which one is better for AI search visibility?
Both tools now sell themselves on AI search, and the allowances differ more than the marketing does. Clearscope tracks queries across ChatGPT and Gemini on every plan, with 50 queries on Essentials and 300 on Business, and adds query fan-out data: the web searches an AI assistant runs to build its answer.
Surfer's coverage depends on the plan. Discovery tracks no prompts, Standard tracks 25 in ChatGPT with a weekly refresh, and Pro and Peace of Mind track 50 and 100 prompts daily across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, AI Overviews and Gemini. If Perplexity or Google's AI answers matter to you, Surfer Pro covers more engines than either Clearscope self-serve plan.
The trade-off is volume against breadth. Clearscope Essentials watches twice as many queries as Surfer Standard for $30 more a month, but in two engines. Our guide on tracking brand mentions in ChatGPT explains what these numbers mean in practice, and the GEO and AI search optimization tools roundup covers dedicated trackers.

Writing and optimization features
Surfer is the broader writing suite. Every plan includes its AI writing assistant (Surfy), a content score, an AI detector and humanizer, a plagiarism check and 1-click optimization and internal linking. Pro adds content ideas, coverage gap analysis, a cannibalization report and custom templates, and Peace of Mind adds API access and MCP for connecting AI agents.
Clearscope keeps a narrower kit. Its plans list topic explorations for research, AI drafts, brand visibility tracking and search intent recommendations, plus live onboarding, training and priority support on every plan. Clearscope's pitch is guidance quality and adoption by a whole team, not the number of automated actions.
The collaboration limits matter for agencies. Surfer keeps content version history for a day on Discovery and six months on Peace of Mind, and its plans include comments, folders and external collaboration links. Clearscope includes unlimited projects and unlimited sharing and exporting on every plan, which suits an agency that hands reports to many clients.
Surfer: the default pick for a small content team
Surfer is the cheaper answer whenever your team fits inside its seat caps, which covers most in-house content teams and solo consultants. At 3 writers and 50 pages, Standard costs $360 a year less than Clearscope Essentials and adds a far larger document allowance, writing tools and plagiarism checks.
Watch out: the trial converts. Surfer's trial article says the 7-day Pro trial needs billing details, does not cancel itself, and charges the plan chosen at checkout when the week ends. The other catch is the seat ladder: each added writer past 1, 3, 5 or 10 forces the next plan up, whatever your page count. Our Surfer SEO review covers the plans in more depth.
Clearscope: the pick for a large team with a focused page set
Clearscope is the cheaper answer once headcount, not page count, is the constraint, as in a content team where editors, writers and SEO leads all need a login. A 10-person content team tracking 50 core pages pays the same Essentials price as a team of one, and adding an eleventh or twentieth writer costs nothing.
Watch out: Clearscope is expensive for a solo writer. One person tracking 10 pages pays $960 a year more than on Surfer Discovery, with no yearly discount to soften it. The 20 drafts a month also cap AI output on both plans, so heavy AI drafting means buying add-ons. Our Clearscope review has the plan-by-plan detail.
How to choose in two questions
Ask how many people need a login, then how many pages you track, because those two numbers decide the bill far more than any feature. If 5 or fewer people need access, Surfer almost always costs less. If it is more than 10, Surfer needs a sales call and Clearscope has a public price.
Between 6 and 10 writers it depends on pages. Under 50 tracked pages, Clearscope Essentials is cheaper than Surfer Peace of Mind. Past 300 pages with a small team, Surfer's per-page cost is lower. Neither fits? Our best content optimization tools guide prices cheaper editors, and best AI SEO tools covers the wider category. How we compared them
Every price and limit on this page was read on the vendors' own pages on 18 October 2026: Surfer's pricing page, Surfer's pricing FAQ and trial article, and Clearscope's pricing page. The team-shape bills use base plans only, billed yearly for Surfer and monthly for Clearscope; totals, gaps and per-seat figures are our arithmetic. The cross-shopping counts come from Toolradar's alternatives graph, October 2026. This is a pricing and plan comparison read from vendor pages, not a test of either editor. Recheck both pages before you buy, since plan limits change. See our editorial policy for how MarketingShot covers tools.
