How to Get Ahrefs for Free in 2026: No Trial, Free Account
Ahrefs has no free trial, per its help center. Ahrefs Free is a $0 account for verified sites, and the cheapest paid plan is Starter at $29 a month.

Ahrefs has no free trial of its paid plans, and its own help center says so. What you can get for $0 is Ahrefs Free, a permanent account with limited data for websites you verify, plus 18 free SEO tools. The cheapest paid subscription is Starter at $29 a month on Ahrefs' USD pricing page.
Every Ahrefs term in this guide comes from its own pages, read on 10 October 2026. The free account costs nothing, needs no card and never expires, but it is narrow by design. Its core SEO data works only on websites you can prove you own, and it caps backlinks, crawl credits and AI document drafts. If you need to analyze a competitor, you need a paid plan, so the real question becomes which plan, and what you can recover if it does not suit you.
Short answer: the options at a glance
Two rows cost nothing. Set up the account first, because it is the only free row that includes Site Explorer and Site Audit.
| Option | Cost (USD) | What you get | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free trial of a paid plan | None offered | The help center says Ahrefs provides no free trials | Ahrefs help center |
| Ahrefs Free account | $0, no card, no expiry | Limited Site Explorer, Site Audit and Web Analytics for verified websites | Ahrefs Free |
| Free SEO tools | $0 | 18 single-task tools, two with a stated result cap | Free SEO tools |
| Starter plan | $29/mo | Cheapest paid subscription; its limits are not listed on the pricing page | Ahrefs pricing |
| Monthly plan refund | On request | Possible if you have not used the service; Ahrefs can decline it | Ahrefs pricing FAQ |
Why Ahrefs has no free trial
The help center answers the question in one line. It says Ahrefs does not provide free trials, and it points visitors to the free account instead, which covers keyword and backlink checks and site audits for websites you can verify. The pricing page's FAQ makes the same point from another angle: apart from its annual option, Ahrefs runs no discounts, and its free route is aimed at website owners.
The word "trial" still shows up on Ahrefs' site, which invites confusion. The Starter button on the pricing page and on the free tools page leads to a sign-up address with "trial" in its link. That sign-up page prices the plan in US dollars at the Starter figure above and shows no free period. Read the link as a label, not as an offer.
Ahrefs' own comparison on its free page describes a typical "free" trial as seven days with a card required. That table is Ahrefs' framing of other vendors, and it sets its free account apart by having no expiry date and no card. Read it as a sales argument, not an independent comparison.
How to claim Ahrefs Free, step by step
- Open the Ahrefs Free page and choose "Sign up for Free." Ahrefs says the account needs no credit card, has no trial period and carries no hidden charges.
- Verify each website you want to use. Site Explorer, Site Audit and Web Analytics need a verified site, which Ahrefs describes as a quick process. Ahrefs allows an unlimited number of verified websites on the free account.
- Use the tools that need no verification: Social Media Manager, AI Content Helper and the SEO Toolbar.
- Upgrade only if you need more. Upgrades happen from account settings, and the free account stays active whether or not you upgrade.
If you used the old Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, you already have this account. Ahrefs says the product is now called Ahrefs Free, and that the two names describe the same account.
What the free account covers, and where it stops
| Feature | Free limit | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Verified websites | Unlimited | Add every site you own, one verification each |
| Site Explorer | 1,000 backlinks and keywords visible at once | Sorting and filters pick the most important rows inside that window |
| Site Audit | 5,000 crawl credits per project each month | Only HTML pages that return status 200 use credits, so broken URLs and redirects are free to crawl |
| Web Analytics | Up to 1 million events per project | Privacy-focused analytics, which Ahrefs positions as an alternative to Google Analytics |
| AI Content Helper | 1 free document per month | Enough to test the workflow, not to run a content budget |
| Social Media Manager | Unlimited channels and posts, still in beta | Scheduling and post metrics without verification |
| Competitor websites | Not included | Analysis of unverified sites is a paid-plan feature |
The last row decides most buying questions. A free account shows you your own backlinks, keywords and audit issues, which is enough to see where your site stands. It does not show how a rival is doing, because Ahrefs reserves analysis of unverified websites for paid subscriptions.
Ahrefs does not say how many credits one page uses, so read the 5,000 as a monthly ceiling per project, not a page count. The credit rule still matters for planning. Redirects, broken URLs and non-HTML files do not use credits, so a site with many of them uses less of the ceiling than its URL count suggests.
Six of the 18 free SEO tools, and their caps
Ahrefs' free SEO tools page lists 18 tools and describes them as limited compared with a paid account. Most state no numeric cap. Two do: the Backlink Checker shows the top 20 backlinks to a site or page, and the SERP Checker analyzes the top 10 rankings for a keyword in a chosen country.
| Tool | What it returns | Stated cap |
|---|---|---|
| Backlink Checker | Backlinks to any site or page | Top 20 backlinks |
| SERP Checker | Top rankings for a keyword in a chosen country | Top 10 results |
| Keyword Difficulty Checker | An estimate of how hard it is to reach the top 10 | None stated |
| Free Keyword Generator | Keyword ideas | None stated |
| Website Authority Checker | Domain Rating for any site | None stated |
| Website Traffic Checker | Search traffic estimates, with a free version | None stated |
These six tools answer one question each, which suits a quick check on a rival or a keyword. The top-20 cap makes the Backlink Checker a first look rather than the basis for a link-building plan. The full list also includes three AI visibility checkers for brand mentions on AI platforms, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews. Ahrefs' page does not say whether each tool needs an account, so check the first screen before you build a workflow around one. For a wider set of options, see our best AI SEO tools roundup.
What the paid plans cost, cheapest first
Ahrefs' help center calls Starter a cheaper monthly plan than Lite. The pricing page confirms both prices in US dollars.
| Plan | Monthly price (USD) | Twelve months, monthly billing | What is listed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $29 | $348 | Described as the plan for researching what people search and for watching competitors; limits not listed |
| Lite | $129 | $1,548 | 1 user, 750 tracked keywords, 100,000 crawl credits |
The twelve-month gap is $1,200 at monthly billing, and the deciding question is whether Lite's extras matter to you. Lite includes six months of historical data and 750 tracked keywords. The pricing page does not list Starter's limits, so check them in your account before you pay.
Annual billing is the other lever, and Ahrefs' two pages disagree about it. The pricing page says annual billing saves up to 17%, while the help center says almost 20% off all annual billing. Annual billing is arranged through support rather than a switch in checkout, so confirm the percentage with Ahrefs before you commit.
Toolradar data: Toolradar tracks 253 SEO tools as of 10 October 2026, and 47% of them are free, freemium or open source. Among the 106 that publish a price, the median cheapest paid plan is $31.78 a month, so Starter sits under the category middle. The best SEO tools guide shows how that catalog ranks.
If AI prompt tracking is the only need, a custom prompt package is the cheaper route, not a plan. The help center calls the Basic package cheaper than Lite, and the pricing page lists it at $50 a month for 2,500 checks. Our Ahrefs pricing breakdown covers the package tiers in detail, and our AI visibility tracker pricing guide prices standalone tools for the same job.
Testing a paid plan without a trial
With no trial, the practical test is a monthly subscription. Ahrefs' pricing FAQ sets the rules:
- There are no contracts or setup fees, and you can switch or cancel at any time.
- Upgrades take effect at once. Downgrades and cancellations take effect at the end of the billing period.
- When a paid subscription ends, the account switches to Ahrefs Free with limited access to Site Explorer and Site Audit.
- Ahrefs does not issue refunds in general. On monthly subscriptions you can ask for one if you have not used the service, and Ahrefs may still decline if it sees material activity.
A one-month test on the cheapest plan costs its monthly price, and the refund is a request, not a right. A cautious buyer should start on a monthly plan and keep the free account as the fallback.
Offers to avoid
- Discount codes. Ahrefs says it offers no promotional or discount codes, and it calls codes found on other websites not legitimate.
- Resellers. Ahrefs says buying from an unauthorized third party breaks its terms and can lead to a temporary or permanent block, with no refund.
- Non-profit deals. Ahrefs currently offers no special pricing, discounts or free access for non-profits.
- Seasonal sales. Ahrefs does not run one-off discounts or seasonal specials, Black Friday and Cyber Monday included.
If you need a trial, use other tools
A real trial is the best way to test competitor research before you commit, and Ahrefs will not give you one. Our Semrush free trial guide covers Semrush's trial length, its card rules and its free account, so you can put the two offers side by side. Our Ahrefs vs Semrush comparison sets the two suites against each other and says which one is worth the money.

How we checked this
We read Ahrefs' pricing page in its USD view on 10 October 2026, along with its Ahrefs Free, free SEO tools and Webmaster Tools pages and its help center article on discounts and trials. Ahrefs shows some visitors euro prices, so every dollar figure here comes from the USD view, with no conversion. The Toolradar figures come from its SEO tools ranking, dated October 2026.
