Buffer Pricing 2026: Per-Channel Costs and the Free Plan

Buffer pricing in 2026: Free covers 3 channels, Essentials is $6 per channel a month ($5 yearly), Team $12 ($10). Volume rates, cost scenarios and the traps.

Buffer Pricing 2026: Per-Channel Costs and the Free Plan

Buffer costs $6 per channel a month on Essentials and $12 per channel on Team, or $5 and $10 a channel when billed yearly. The Free plan covers 3 channels with 10 scheduled posts each, for one user. Above 10 channels the per-channel rate drops, so a 25-channel agency on Team pays $180 a month, not $300.

Those figures come from Buffer's pricing page and the plain-text version of it that Buffer publishes, read on 18 October 2026. Buffer says its pricing was last updated in November 2025. The per-channel model is the reason Buffer wins so many small-business shortlists: you pay for the accounts you post to, not for a bundle of seats and profiles you may never fill. The flip side is that every channel you add raises the bill, including the three you used for free.

Toolradar data: Toolradar, the software directory we run, tracks 158 social media management tools as of 17 October 2026, and Buffer's entry price ranks #3 of 89 (joint) among the tools in that category with a verified entry price, where the median is $19.99 a month. The full field sits on the social media management ranking, and Buffer's own profile is on Toolradar.

What each plan actually costs

Free, the three-channel plan

The Free plan is a working scheduler, not a demo. You can connect three channels, keep 10 posts queued per channel (30 in total across three accounts), and a slot refills as soon as a post goes out. The AI Assistant is included, and so are the community inbox for replying to comments, the Start Page link-in-bio tool, link shortening and the Canva, Google Drive and Zapier integrations.

The limits are about volume and history, not features. Insights stop at 30 days, AI reply suggestions are capped at 5 a week, and you get one saved reply and three tags. A creator who posts once a day can only batch 10 days ahead on each account, and that queue limit is the real upgrade trigger. Our best free social media schedulers list compares that queue with the other no-cost options.

Essentials, the solo plan

Essentials is for one person who wants to schedule without counting slots. It removes the queue cap (Buffer's fair use policy sets the real ceiling at 5,000 scheduled posts per channel), keeps the full analytics history, and adds performance reports, custom UTM parameters, the hashtag manager, first comments on Instagram and LinkedIn, channel groups and custom video covers.

The catch is in the name: one user. A freelancer or a founder running their own accounts fits; a business where someone else drafts posts and the owner approves them does not. For a solo marketer on five channels, Essentials costs $30 a month billed monthly or $25 a month billed yearly, which is $300 a year.

Team, for anyone who shares the account

Team adds unlimited users, approval workflows, access levels so each person sees only the channels they work on, and branded reports for clients. On channels 1 to 10 it costs exactly twice the Essentials rate. A five-channel small business that wants two people in the tool pays $60 a month on monthly billing or $50 a month on yearly, $600 a year.

That doubling is the decision point for small teams. If the only reason to upgrade is a second login, the jump costs as much again as the whole Essentials bill. It pays off when approvals or client-branded reports are part of the workflow, and it gets much cheaper per channel once you pass 10, as the next section shows.

The volume rates, and why Team gets cheap past 10 channels

Buffer prices channels in bands. The first 10 channels are billed at the standard rate; each channel after that costs less, and the per-channel rates on monthly billing are:

Channels Essentials, per channel a month Team, per channel a month
1 to 10 $6 $12
11 to 25 $4 $4
26 to 50 $3 $3
51 and up $1 $2

The pattern most explainers miss: from channel 11 to channel 50, Team and Essentials cost the same per extra channel. The whole price gap between the plans is built in the first 10 channels, so on monthly billing Team stays exactly $60 a month above Essentials anywhere between 10 and 50 channels. Past 50 the gap widens again by $1 for each extra channel.

Buffer's own worked examples confirm the math. On monthly billing, 10 channels cost twice as much on Team as on Essentials, 25 channels cost $120 and $180, and 50 channels cost $195 and $255. On yearly billing the same 50 channels cost $163 and $213 a month.

Cost scenarios, computed from the list prices

Buyer Plan Channels Monthly billing Yearly billing Per year (yearly)
Creator on three accounts Free 3 Free Free Free
Same creator, unlimited queue Essentials 3 $18 $15 $180
Solo marketer Essentials 5 $30 $25 $300
Small business, two people Team 5 $60 $50 $600
Agency, 25 client accounts Team 25 $180 $150 $1,800

The yearly column uses the rates on Buffer's pricing page. The agency row is where the volume bands matter: at the 10-channel standard rate those 25 channels on Team would be $300 a month, so the bands save $120 a month on monthly billing.

The costs the plan page does not spell out

Upgrading charges for your free channels too. Buffer's FAQ is explicit: once you move to a paid plan, you pay for every connected channel, including the three you ran on Free. A creator who upgrades to schedule more posts on the same three accounts goes from $0 to $15 a month on yearly Essentials.

The yearly discount is smaller than the FAQ says. The billing FAQ promises a 20% discount for annual billing, but the price cards say "save 2 months", and the rates match that: each yearly per-channel rate is one sixth below the monthly one, a 16.7% cut. Budget on the price table, not the headline percentage.

A second user means Team, at double the base rate. Essentials has one login and no cheaper seat add-on. For a team of two on ten channels, that is $50 a month more on yearly billing for the approvals and access controls, whether or not you use them.

Some channels get less than others. Buffer's channel table shows automatic publishing is not available for Facebook groups or Instagram personal profiles, which get reminder notifications instead, and advanced analytics cover Facebook pages, Instagram business and creator accounts, LinkedIn pages and X, not TikTok, YouTube Shorts or Threads. If your mix leans on TikTok, check what the analytics tab will show before you pay per channel for it.

There is no separate agency plan. Agencies buy Team and rely on the volume bands, with branded reports as the client-facing feature.

Buffer vs Hootsuite, Later and Sprout Social

Tool Entry paid plan Entry price What the entry price covers
Buffer Essentials $5 per channel a month, yearly One user, unlimited scheduled posts per channel
Later Starter $18.75 a month, yearly 1 social set of 8 profiles, 1 user, up to 30 posts per profile
Hootsuite Standard $99 a month 10 social accounts
Sprout Social Essentials $79 per seat a month, yearly ($99 monthly) 5 social profiles per seat

Prices were read on Later's pricing page, Hootsuite's plans page and Sprout Social's pricing page on 18 October 2026. Hootsuite's figure comes from its plans FAQ, which puts paid plans at $99 for Standard, $199 for Professional and up to $399 for Advanced.

For one person on a handful of accounts, Buffer is the cheapest paid option here. Three channels on yearly Essentials cost less than Later's Starter, and Buffer's queue is unlimited where Later caps posts per profile. The order flips at around four channels: eight channels on yearly Essentials cost $40 a month, more than double Later Starter for the same eight profiles, so a solo user who stays under Later's post cap gets more accounts for less there.

Against Hootsuite and Sprout Social the comparison turns on users. A ten-channel team on yearly Buffer Team pays $100 a month with unlimited users, level with Hootsuite Standard's starting price for the same ten accounts, while one person on Buffer Essentials pays half that. Sprout Social at one seat covers five profiles for less than Buffer Team at ten, but each extra person adds a full seat, so a team of three pays three times. Our Hootsuite vs Buffer comparison covers the feature trade-offs, and the Hootsuite review and Sprout Social review price those two in depth. Buyers leaving the bigger suites can start with cheaper Sprout Social alternatives or Hootsuite alternatives.

Is Buffer worth it in 2026?

For a solo marketer or a small business on up to about five channels, yes. The Free plan is enough to learn the tool, Essentials is a low monthly line for unlimited scheduling and real analytics, and nothing in the price list forces a seat bundle you do not need. Per-channel billing also makes the bill predictable: you can say exactly what one more account costs before you connect it.

It is a weaker deal in two cases. A single user with many accounts and a light posting rhythm pays more on Buffer than on Later's bundled profiles, as the comparison above shows; Later alternatives covers that side of the market. And a team that needs social listening, deep inbox routing or enterprise reporting will outgrow Buffer's feature set whatever the price, which is when the best social media management tools ranking and the Vista Social review are the better next read.

FAQ

How much does Buffer cost per month in 2026?

Buffer Essentials costs $6 per channel a month on monthly billing or $5 on yearly, and Team costs $12 per channel a month or $10 on yearly, for the first 10 channels. Channels 11 to 25 drop to $4 each on both plans. The Free plan is $0 for up to 3 channels. Prices were read on Buffer's pricing page on 18 October 2026.

Is Buffer free?

Yes. Buffer's Free plan connects up to 3 channels for one user, with 10 scheduled posts per channel at any one time, the AI Assistant, a community inbox and 30 days of analytics history. It never expires, and accounts whose 14-day paid trial ends without payment drop back to it.

How does Buffer's per-channel pricing work?

A channel is one connected social account, such as one Instagram profile or one LinkedIn page. You pay per channel, and the rate falls in bands: standard for channels 1 to 10, then lower for 11 to 25, 26 to 50 and 51 and up. Five brands with an Instagram and a Facebook page each count as 10 channels.

What is the difference between Buffer Essentials and Team?

Essentials is for one user; Team adds unlimited users, approval workflows, per-channel access levels and branded reports. On the first 10 channels Team costs twice the Essentials rate, but from channel 11 to 50 the extra channels cost the same on both plans, so on monthly billing the gap stays at $60 a month in that range.

How much does Buffer cost for an agency?

There is no separate agency plan, so agencies buy Team. At 25 channels Team costs $180 a month on monthly billing or $150 a month on yearly, $1,800 a year. At 50 channels it costs $255 a month on monthly billing, thanks to the volume bands.

Is Buffer cheaper than Hootsuite?

For one user, yes: 10 channels on Buffer Essentials cost about half of Hootsuite Standard, which starts at $99 a month for 10 social accounts. For a team, 10 channels on Buffer Team cost $100 a month on yearly billing, level with Hootsuite Standard, but with unlimited users. Hootsuite's higher plans add features Buffer does not sell, so compare on features once the budget fits.

Does Buffer offer discounts?

Two. Yearly billing cuts every per-channel rate by about 17%, even though the billing FAQ describes it as 20%. Nonprofits and charities get 50% off paid plans through Buffer's nonprofit program.
