TL;DR

Buffer is the best free social media scheduler for one marketer on up to three channels. Its free plan costs $0 for three channels and one user, and its queue of 10 posts per channel refills as posts go out. For four or more channels, including X, Zoho Social is the free plan that covers six channels with no charge, though it has no reports dashboard on the free tier.

Metricool gives the most analysis for free, with 30 days of history and five competitor profiles, but it caps the whole brand at 20 posts a month and leaves out X and LinkedIn. Publer and Iconosquare suit two or three accounts. Planoly's free tier runs on the mobile app only. Later and Hootsuite have no free plan at all, only 14-day trials, and Postiz has no free cloud plan, only a 7-day trial.

Key facts7 tools compared: Buffer, Zoho Social, Metricool, Publer, Iconosquare, Planoly, Postiz
  • Updated: October 10, 2026
  • Top pick: Buffer (best for: One marketer or a small team on three channels or fewer, posting on a steady weekly rhythm)
  • Top pick price as of October 10, 2026: Buffer: Free: 3 channels, 1 user. Essentials $5/month per channel, or $60 per channel billed yearly.
  • 7 tools compared: Buffer, Zoho Social, Metricool, Publer, Iconosquare, Planoly, Postiz
  • Zoho Social (best for: A single brand on four to six channels, including X and LinkedIn, run by one person): Free: 1 brand, 6 channels, 1 team member. No USD price for paid plans is printed.
  • Metricool (best for: One brand on Instagram and Facebook that wants 30 days of analytics and a competitor watch, free): Free: 1 brand, 20 posts a month. Starter from $20/month billed yearly, up to 5 brands.
  • Publer (best for: Creators and small brands on Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn who never post to X): Free forever: 3 accounts (no X), 1 user, 10 scheduled posts per account. Paid plans are priced per account.

A free social media scheduler is only free until one of its limits bites: the second editor, the fourth channel, or the twenty-first post of the month. The price tag tells you nothing about which limit you will hit first.

Toolradar data: of the 148 social media management tools we track, 66 (45%) offer a free tier, but only 6 (4%) are free with no paid upgrade, as of October 2026. That gap is why most free lists stop at the price, when the limits are where the decision actually sits.

Below, each tool with a free plan is read against the same scenarios.

Tools with only a trial are named too, so nobody mistakes a trial for a free plan. Prices come from each vendor's own pricing page, checked in October 2026.

Best for: One marketer or a small team on three channels or fewer, posting on a steady weekly rhythm

PricingFree: 3 channels, 1 user. Essentials $5/month per channel, or $60 per channel billed yearly.

+The queue refills as each post goes out, so the free tier does not interrupt a steady monthly schedule.
+Insights keeps 30 days of history, enough to compare two weeks of posts against the two weeks before them.
−Three channels is a hard ceiling. A fourth channel means a paid plan, billed per channel.
−One user only, so an editor or an approver means paying, not adding a colleague for free.

Best for: A single brand on four to six channels, including X and LinkedIn, run by one person

PricingFree: 1 brand, 6 channels, 1 team member. No USD price for paid plans is printed.

+The free tier includes an X profile and a LinkedIn company page. Metricool's free plan leaves out both, and Publer's leaves out X.
+Five AI credits come with the free plan, so caption help is part of the free setup.
−No reports dashboard on the free tier, so monthly analytics sit behind a paid plan.
−One team member on the free tier, and no USD price is printed for the next step up.

Best for: One brand on Instagram and Facebook that wants 30 days of analytics and a competitor watch, free

PricingFree: 1 brand, 20 posts a month. Starter from $20/month billed yearly, up to 5 brands.

+Five competitor profiles come with the free tier, a benchmark the other free plans here do not list.
+Thirty days of history covers a full month of posts, enough to see which format is working before any upgrade.
−The 20-post cap covers the whole brand, so one daily Instagram account runs out on the 20th of the month.
−X and LinkedIn are not on the free plan at all, so a brand with either channel pays from day one.

Best for: Creators and small brands on Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn who never post to X

PricingFree forever: 3 accounts (no X), 1 user, 10 scheduled posts per account. Paid plans are priced per account.

+Ten queued posts per account and 25 saved drafts give a working queue at no cost.
+A published post frees its queue slot, so the calendar refills without changing plan.
−X cannot be connected on the free plan, so an X-first brand needs another tool at $0.
−Post history stays for 24 hours, which leaves nothing to look back on in a monthly review.
Visit Publer →

Best for: A creator or single-channel marketer with two profiles and a steady weekly posting rhythm

PricingFree: 2 profiles, 1 user, 10 posts per profile a month. Starter from €9/month billed yearly.

+The post cap is per profile, so two posts a week per profile, about nine a month, fits inside the free plan.
+One month of history is enough for a before-and-after check on a single post series.
−Two profiles and one user is a tight free plan, so a third channel or a second editor forces a paid tier.
−The paid plans are priced in euros with no US-dollar figure, so a US budget needs its own conversion.
Visit Iconosquare →

Best for: Instagram-first creators who plan the grid from a phone and need about ten uploads a month

PricingFree on the mobile app: 10 uploads a month. Starter $14/month, 1 social set, 1 user.

+Unlimited uploads on Starter turn a 10-upload test into a working grid for one account.
+The Starter price is quoted in US dollars, so it needs no conversion.
−The free tier runs in the mobile app only, and no social account limit is stated for it.
−Starter covers one social set and one user, so a second set or user means a higher tier.
Visit Planoly →
7

Best for: Developers and agencies willing to self-host the open-source code and run an API or CLI

PricingNo permanent free plan, 7-day trial. Standard $23/month billed yearly ($29 monthly), 5 channels.

+Standard allows unlimited posts on five channels, so the cloud plan has no volume cap.
+The 7-day trial applies to every plan, so a week of testing comes before the first bill.
−Standard has no team support, so a shared calendar with an editor is not on that tier.
−Postiz presents self-hosting as a secondary option, so setup and upkeep fall on your own team.

What it is

A free social media scheduler is a tool that queues and publishes posts to your social accounts at no cost, within fixed limits on channels, users, posts or history. Those limits, not the price, decide whether a free plan works for your week.

How it works

Count three things before you read any plan: channels, people who touch the calendar, and posts per month. Then run the two scenarios below.

Scenario one: two channels (Instagram and Facebook), one user, 20 posts a month. Buffer, Metricool, Iconosquare and Publer all cover it free.

The caps differ in type.

Metricool and Iconosquare count posts per month, while Buffer and Publer count a queue that reopens each time a post publishes.

Scenario two: four channels (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and X), one user. Buffer's free plan stops at three channels, Metricool's free plan leaves out both X and LinkedIn, and Publer's leaves out X.

Among the free plans that state a channel limit, only Zoho Social covers all four with no charge.

Why it matters

A free plan fails on the cap you hit first, and that is almost never the price. Buffer caps queued posts per channel and refills the queue as posts go out, so a steady month never hits a wall. Metricool caps the whole brand at 20 posts a month, so one daily Instagram account runs out on the 20th.

Teams that choose on price alone find the cap in launch week, when a blocked queue is the expensive part.

Key features to look for

The cap that matters
Each free plan caps something different: channels, users, a monthly total or a queue. Metricool and Iconosquare count posts per month. Buffer and Publer count a queue that reopens as posts publish.
X and LinkedIn on the free tier
Zoho Social's free plan includes an X profile and a LinkedIn company page. Metricool's free plan leaves out both, and Publer's leaves out X.
Analytics without paying
Buffer and Metricool keep 30 days of history on the free plan, Iconosquare keeps one month, Publer keeps published posts for 24 hours, and Zoho Social has no reports dashboard on its free tier.
One person per free plan
Every free plan that states a user limit allows one person. Zoho Social calls it one team member, and the other tools state one user.
Trial-only tools
Later offers a 14-day trial, Hootsuite a 14-day trial that needs no card, and Postiz a 7-day trial. None has a free plan, so a trial is the only free path to try them.

Pricing

Methodology: each vendor's own pricing page was read in October 2026. For every tool we recorded the free plan's channel, user, post and history limits, then the cheapest paid step with its billing basis. Tools with only a trial are listed separately and are not ranked.

No third-party review site was used for any price.

Prices are quoted in US dollars where the vendor prints them. Iconosquare's paid plans appear only in euros, so they are shown in euros rather than converted.

Buffer's Essentials is $5 a month per channel, or $60 a year per channel on yearly billing (Buffer pricing).

A fourth channel on Buffer therefore moves the brand onto a paid plan.

Metricool's Starter starts at $20 a month on yearly billing for up to five brands, or $25 a month billed monthly (Metricool pricing).

Planoly's Starter is $14 a month (Planoly pricing).

Postiz's Standard is $23 a month billed yearly or $29 a month billed monthly (Postiz pricing).

Publer prices its paid plans per social account and quotes no figure for them (Publer pricing).

Later's Starter is $18.75 a month billed yearly after a 14-day trial (Later pricing). Hootsuite's FAQ says paid plans start at $99, with a 14-day trial that needs no card (Hootsuite plans).

Mistakes to avoid
×Reading a post count as the wrong kind of cap. Metricool's 20 posts are a monthly total for the whole brand, while Buffer's 10 are a queue that reopens each time a post goes out.
×Assuming the free plan covers X. Metricool and Publer leave X out of the free tier, and Zoho Social is the one free plan here that names an X profile in its limits.
×Counting a trial as a free plan. Later and Hootsuite offer 14-day trials and no free plan, and Postiz offers a 7-day trial with no free cloud tier.
×Stopping at the channel count. Buffer's three-channel free plan fails the moment a fourth network joins the calendar, even when the post volume stays low.
Expert tips
→Count channels first, users second and posts third. A four-channel brand fails Buffer's free plan on channels, and runs into Metricool's channel exclusions before its 20-post cap.
→Price the first paid step against the cap you will hit first. For Buffer, a fourth channel moves you onto the per-channel paid plan.
→Recheck before you commit. Free tiers and their caps change, so confirm the limits on the vendor's pricing page on the day you sign up.

The bottom line

Open Buffer when three channels cover the brand and the queue is the only worry. Open Zoho Social when X or LinkedIn is on the calendar and reports can wait.

Metricool suits one brand on Instagram and Facebook that wants analytics, Publer suits three accounts without X, Iconosquare suits two profiles, Planoly suits Instagram-first planning from a phone, and Postiz is for teams that will host it themselves.

The tool profiles are Buffer, Zoho Social, Metricool, Publer, Iconosquare, Planoly and Postiz.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free social media scheduler in 2026?

Buffer, if three channels cover the brand. Its free plan costs $0 for three channels and one user, with a queue of 10 posts per channel that refills as posts go out (Buffer pricing, October 2026). For four or more channels, including X, Zoho Social's free plan covers six channels with no charge.

Is Hootsuite still free?

No. Hootsuite has no free plan. Its plans page lists a 14-day free trial that needs no card (Hootsuite plans, October 2026), and its FAQ says paid plans start at $99, so a team that wants Hootsuite past two weeks pays from day 15.

Does Later have a free plan?

No. Later offers a 14-day trial. Its Starter plan is $18.75 a month billed yearly, for one social set of eight profiles, one user and 30 scheduled posts per profile (Later pricing, October 2026).

Which free social media schedulers include X?

Zoho Social's free plan includes an X profile. Metricool's free plan leaves out X and LinkedIn, and Publer's free plan cannot connect X accounts. Postiz has no free cloud plan, so X there starts with a paid Standard tier.

How much does the cheapest paid step cost?

The lowest USD price on this list is Buffer's Essentials at $5 a month per channel, or $60 a year on yearly billing. Planoly's Starter is $14 a month for one social set, and Postiz's Standard is $23 a month billed yearly for five channels, about $4.60 per channel.

Is Postiz free?

Not in the cloud. Postiz has no permanent free plan, only a 7-day trial on every plan. The project is open source on GitHub and lists self-hosting as a secondary option, but its pricing page gives no cost for it, so the server you run it on is the real cost (Postiz pricing).

Can a free plan support a team?

Only one person. Every free plan that states a user limit allows one user, so a second editor or an approver means a paid plan on every tool in this list.
