Cheaper Sprout Social Alternatives in 2026: Costs Compared

For one user running five social profiles on yearly billing, Later's Starter plan is the cheapest paid alternative to Sprout Social: $18.75 a month, or $225 a year, on Later's pricing page checked 10 October 2026. Sprout Essentials costs $79 per seat a month on the same terms, which is $948 a year. Metricool Starter comes next at $240, and Buffer Essentials costs $300 for five channels.

Sprout is the reference in this comparison, but the cheaper tools are not the same product. Each saving comes with a limit, such as a profile cap, a post cap, a missing inbox or a per-user meter. This page prices one scenario for every vendor, so the arithmetic compares like with like.

Toolradar data: The software directory we run tracks 148 social media management tools as of 10 October 2026. The median cheapest paid plan across the 45 that publish a price is $19 a month, so Sprout's seat sits well above the middle of the category. The social media management ranking lists the tools behind those counts.

The scenario and the summary table

Every row uses the same setup: one user, one brand, and five profiles on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube and Pinterest. The team schedules posts and reads basic analytics, and it does not need a shared inbox. Prices are US list prices billed yearly for 12 months, before taxes and add-ons.

Tool and plan Entry price Cost for 12 months Free plan (limits) Billing basis Limits and hidden costs
Metricool Free $0 $0 Yes: 1 brand, 20 posts a month No charge No LinkedIn or X; 30 days of analytics
Later Starter $18.75/mo $225 No Billed yearly 8 profiles, one per platform; 30 posts per profile a month; no extra users
Metricool Starter $20/mo $240 No Billed yearly Up to 5 brands; X is a paid add-on
Buffer Essentials $5/mo per channel $300 No Billed yearly per channel 1 user; unlimited posts within a 5,000-per-channel fair-use cap
Sprout Essentials $79/seat/mo $948 No, 30-day trial Billed yearly; $99 billed monthly 5 profile cap; no shared inbox on this plan
Agorapulse Standard $79/user/mo $948 No, 30-day trial Billed yearly 10 profiles; priced per user
Hootsuite Standard $99/user/mo $1,188 No, 14-day trial Billed annually 10 social profiles; priced per user

Sprout Essentials is the reference because it is the cheapest Sprout plan that covers five profiles. The arithmetic is one seat at the Essentials rate, times 12 months, which gives $948. Later's $18.75 times 12 gives $225, a saving of $723 a year.

What each saving buys

Later Starter saves $723 a year against Sprout Essentials, Metricool Starter saves $708, and Buffer Essentials saves $648. Agorapulse Standard costs the same as Sprout Essentials but covers 10 profiles instead of five. Hootsuite Standard costs $240 more than Sprout, which makes it the most expensive plan in this scenario.

Where each cheap plan stops

Later Starter holds one profile per platform, eight in total. A second Instagram or TikTok account does not fit in that set, and Starter allows no extra social sets or users. It caps each profile at 30 scheduled posts a month.

Metricool Free costs nothing, but it caps the whole brand at 20 scheduled posts a month and leaves out LinkedIn and X. Five profiles posting once a day need 150 posts a month, so the free plan only fits a light schedule. For the wider free field, see the best free social media schedulers.

Metricool Starter is priced by brand. At $20 a month it covers up to five brands, so five profiles on one brand carry no per-profile charge. X is a paid add-on on top of that price.

Buffer Essentials is priced per channel, so the bill rises with every account: $300 a year for five channels and $600 for ten. Team, at $10 per channel, adds approval workflows and unlimited team members, and it costs $600 a year for five channels.

Sprout Essentials caps the profile count at five and leaves out the shared inbox. Monthly billing costs $99 a seat, which is 25% more than yearly billing.

Agorapulse Standard covers 10 profiles for the same yearly bill as Sprout Essentials, but the price is per user. Two users cost $1,896.

Hootsuite Standard covers 10 social profiles per user, billed annually. For one user it is the most expensive plan in the table, at $1,188 a year.

Where the ranking flips

The order changes with two numbers: how many profiles the brand runs, and how many people log in.

  • Ten profiles on one brand: Sprout Essentials and Standard both stop at five. The Sprout plan that covers ten is Professional at $299 per seat a month, or $3,588 a year. Buffer's ten channels cost $600, and Later's Growth plan holds 16 profiles in two social sets for $450 a year with two users included.
  • Two users, five profiles: Two Sprout Essentials seats cost $1,896, and two Agorapulse users cost the same. Two Hootsuite Standard users cost $2,376. Later Growth covers both users for $450, and Buffer Team covers unlimited team members for $600 on five channels.

If all ten profiles belong to one brand, Metricool Starter stays at $240 a year, because its price counts brands rather than profiles.

Quick pick by scenario

  • Five profiles on five different networks, one user, lowest paid bill: Later Starter, as long as the team posts no more than 30 times per profile each month.
  • Five profiles, one user, unlimited posts within fair use: Buffer Essentials, billed per channel, so each new account adds to the bill.
  • Five profiles, one brand, a free start: Metricool Free at $0, if the team posts 20 times a month or less and does not need LinkedIn or X.
  • A shared inbox, review replies and keyword monitoring: Sprout Standard, where those features start, at $199 per seat a month.

Who should stay on Sprout

This comparison assumes the team does not need Sprout's shared inbox, review replies or keyword monitoring. Those features start at the Standard seat, $199 per seat a month, and they are the reason to pay for Sprout. A team that answers public comments from the same tool it posts from should price Standard before choosing a cheaper plan.

Methodology

  • One scenario for every vendor: one user, one brand, five profiles, scheduling and basic analytics, yearly billing, 12 months, US list prices before tax.
  • Prices come from each vendor's own pricing page, checked on 10 October 2026: Sprout Social, Later, Metricool, Buffer, Agorapulse and Hootsuite.
  • A vendor enters the ranking only when its own page gives a plan price for the scenario. Free trials and add-ons are left out of the totals.
  • Toolradar's count and median come from its social media management ranking, dated 10 October 2026. Tool profiles: Later, Metricool, Buffer, Agorapulse and Hootsuite.
