Later vs Buffer 2026: Which Scheduler Costs Less?

Later vs Buffer in 2026: Buffer is cheaper for one to three channels, Later from four profiles up. Prices, post caps, team seats and four monthly bills.

Later vs Buffer 2026: Which Scheduler Costs Less?

Buffer is cheaper for one to three channels, and Later is cheaper from four profiles up. Buffer Essentials costs $5 per channel a month on yearly billing, with a free plan for three channels. Later Starter costs $18.75 a month billed yearly and covers one profile on each of eight platforms. Teams that need approvals pay less on Later Growth than on Buffer Team. Prices read October 21, 2026.

The two tools price the same job in opposite ways. Buffer charges for every connected channel, so the bill grows with each profile you add. Later charges for a bundle of profiles called a social set, so the bill stays flat until you outgrow the bundle or need more seats. Which one costs less depends almost entirely on how many profiles you run. Links to Later and Buffer may earn MarketingShot a commission; the comparison below uses list prices only.

Prices come from Later's pricing page, read in both its monthly and yearly views, and from Buffer's pricing page with its machine-readable price list, all read October 21, 2026.

Toolradar data: Later is listed as an alternative to 45 other tools and Buffer to 44, #4 and #5 of 159 social media management tools, on their Later and Buffer Toolradar profiles, as of October 2026. Buyers cross-shop these two almost equally, which is why the pricing model decides more deals than any feature.

Later vs Buffer pricing at a glance

Plan Yearly billing Monthly billing What you get
Buffer Free $0 $0 3 channels, 10 queued posts per channel, 1 user
Buffer Essentials $5 per channel/mo $6 per channel/mo Unlimited posts, 1 user, advanced analytics
Buffer Team $10 per channel/mo $12 per channel/mo Unlimited members, approvals, access levels
Later Starter $18.75/mo $25/mo 1 social set (8 profiles), 1 user, 30 posts per profile a month
Later Growth $37.50/mo $50/mo 2 social sets (16 profiles), 2 users, 180 posts per profile, inbox, approvals
Later Scale $82.50/mo $110/mo 6 social sets (48 profiles), 4 users, unlimited posts, listening

Buffer's per-channel price falls with volume: on monthly billing, channels 11 to 25 cost $4 each on both paid plans, channels 26 to 50 cost $3, and above 50 Essentials drops to $1 and Team to $2. Later adds extra social sets at $15 a month and extra users at $5 a month on monthly billing, or $11.25 and $3.75 on yearly billing, but only on Growth and Scale.

What does "channel" vs "social set" mean for your bill?

A Buffer channel is one connected profile: your Instagram account is one channel, your LinkedIn page is another. A Later social set holds up to one profile from each of eight platforms: Instagram, Facebook, Threads, Pinterest, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube and Snapchat.

The break-even is four profiles on yearly billing and five on monthly billing (our arithmetic). Four Buffer Essentials channels cost $20 a month on yearly billing against Later Starter's flat price, and five channels on monthly billing cost $30 against Later's $25. Below those counts, Buffer is cheaper; above them, Later's bundle wins as long as you stay within one profile per platform.

The set structure has one catch. Two Instagram accounts need two social sets, even if you run nothing else, so a business with several accounts on one platform fills Later's sets faster than the profile count suggests.

Which costs less at four common account sizes?

Each scenario uses the cheapest plan on each tool that covers the profiles and seats, before tax. Totals are our arithmetic from the printed prices.

Scenario Later plan Later, yearly / monthly Buffer plan Buffer, yearly / monthly Cheaper
Solo creator, 3 channels Starter $18.75 / $25 Essentials, 3 channels $15 / $18 Buffer
Small brand, 6 platforms, 1 user Starter $18.75 / $25 Essentials, 6 channels $30 / $36 Later
Two brands, 4 platforms each, 3 users with approvals Growth plus 1 user $41.25 / $55 Team, 8 channels $80 / $96 Later
Agency, 25 channels, 6 users with approvals Scale plus 2 users $90 / $120 Team, 25 channels $150 / $180 Later

The solo row is Buffer's natural market. Three channels on Essentials undercut Later Starter on both billing cycles, and the free plan covers the same three channels if 10 queued posts per channel at a time is enough.

The team rows are where Later pulls ahead. Buffer Team multiplies its higher per-channel price by every profile, while Later Growth already includes two seats, two sets and approvals. The agency row assumes the 25 channels fit within six of each platform; seven Instagram accounts would need a seventh set, at the extra-set price above.

Buffer's counterweight is seats. Team includes unlimited members, so an agency with 20 people pays the same Buffer bill as one with 6, while each extra Later user adds to the total. At 25 channels on yearly billing, Later stays cheaper until the team reaches 22 users, where the two bills meet (our arithmetic).

How do post limits compare?

Post caps are the second cost lever, and they favor Buffer. Paid Buffer plans schedule unlimited posts per channel, subject to a fair use policy. Later counts posts when they are scheduled, per profile per month: 30 on Starter, 180 on Growth, unlimited only on Scale.

Thirty posts a profile is one a day on most months. A brand that posts Instagram Stories several times a day will hit Starter's cap within the first week or two, and the next step is Growth at twice the price. Buffer's free plan works differently again: 10 scheduled posts per channel at any one time, refilling as each one publishes.

If your posting rhythm is daily feed posts, Later Starter covers it. If it includes Stories, Shorts and replies-as-posts, price Later Growth or Buffer Essentials instead.

Free plans and trials

Buffer's free plan is on its pricing page: three channels, one user, 10 queued posts per channel, 100 saved ideas, 30 days of analytics history and the community inbox for comments. It is the stronger free tier of the two for anyone running a small brand on a budget.

Later also has a Free plan, described in its help center rather than on the pricing page. It offers limited post scheduling, a calendar limited to two weeks in the past and future, introductory analytics and a Link in Bio page. It suits creators testing the tool, not a brand calendar.

Both paid lineups come with a 14-day free trial. Later's trial FAQ says the paid subscription starts automatically when the trial ends unless you cancel, and a card is required at signup. Later also offers qualified nonprofits 50% off its annual Growth plan.

Free plans cut both ways, so our roundup of the best free social media schedulers ranks the alternatives if neither free tier fits.

Features: where each tool earns its price

Later's paid plans are built around visual planning for Instagram and TikTok. Every plan includes Link in Bio, best-time-to-post suggestions and hashtag tools. Growth adds the social inbox for Instagram and Facebook messages and comments plus TikTok comments, approvals with outside reviewers, UGC collection and a year of analytics. Scale adds competitive benchmarking for up to 20 competitors, brand mentions and sentiment, Meta ads analytics and two years of history.

Buffer's paid plans are built around a fast queue across many channels. Essentials includes unlimited posts, advanced analytics with unlimited history, a hashtag manager, first-comment scheduling for Instagram and LinkedIn, and API access with three keys. Team adds access levels, content approval workflows and unlimited team members.

For a solo marketer, the inbox can decide it. Buffer includes a community inbox for comments on every plan, free included, while Later reserves its social inbox for Growth and above. A solo marketer who answers comments daily gets that on Buffer for a few dollars a month, but on Later only at the Growth price.

The Buffer review and the Later review go deeper on each product, and the Later alternatives list covers the tools buyers compare after these two.

Which should you choose?

Choose Buffer if you run three channels or fewer, want a usable free plan, post more than once a day, or have a large team that would make per-seat pricing expensive. Its per-channel model also suits agencies whose client list changes, because a channel can be dropped the month a client leaves.

Choose Later if you run four or more profiles across different platforms, work in a small team that needs approvals, or rely on Link in Bio and Instagram-first planning. Its bundles make the second brand and the second teammate cheap, as long as you stay inside the post caps.

FAQ

Is Later or Buffer better in 2026?

Buffer is better for one to three channels, heavy posting and large teams, because it charges per channel with unlimited posts and unlimited members on Team. Later is better for four or more profiles across platforms and for small teams that need approvals, because Growth bundles two social sets and two users.

Is Buffer cheaper than Later?

Only at small account sizes. On yearly billing, Buffer Essentials costs less than Later Starter for up to three channels; at four channels the bundle wins. On monthly billing, Buffer stays cheaper up to four channels, at $6 a channel against Later's $25 a month.

Does Later have a free plan like Buffer?

Yes, but a smaller one. Later's Free plan is described in its help center, with limited scheduling and a calendar window of two weeks. Buffer's free plan, shown on its pricing page, covers three channels with 10 queued posts per channel.

How many posts can I schedule on Later?

Later counts scheduled posts per profile per month: 30 on Starter, 180 on Growth and unlimited on Scale. Buffer's paid plans schedule unlimited posts per channel under a fair use policy.

Which is better for agencies, Later or Buffer?

For an agency with 25 channels and six users, Later Scale costs less than Buffer Team on both billing cycles, provided the channels fit within six of each platform. Buffer suits agencies with very large teams or frequent client churn, because members are unlimited and channels can be removed one at a time.

Do Later and Buffer offer annual discounts?

Yes. Later's yearly billing is 25% off its monthly price, and Buffer's yearly billing saves about two months a year, so Essentials is $5 a channel instead of $6.
