Eight copywriting tools compared on what their free plans allow, where the allowance ends, and the cheapest paid step, read on vendor pricing pages in October 2026.

TL;DR

Rytr is the best free AI copywriting tool in 2026 for short, repeatable copy. Its free plan has no end date and needs no card, and it allows 10,000 characters of AI generation a month, with one language and no tone matching. Claude and Gemini also have free plans, but neither publishes a fixed count, and Grammarly's free tier caps AI use at 100 prompts a month.

Copy.ai, Jasper, Writesonic and Anyword publish no free plan. Jasper's Pro, Writesonic's article writer and Anyword's Starter start with a 7-day trial instead. The cheapest paid steps are Google AI Plus at $4.99 a month, Rytr Unlimited at $7.50 a month on its yearly plan, and Claude Pro at $17 a month billed yearly.

Toolradar data: Toolradar tracks 12 copywriting tools as of October 10, 2026, and 6 of them have a free plan. The allowances below come from each vendor's own pricing page, read on 10 October 2026.

Key facts8 tools compared: Rytr, Claude, Gemini, Grammarly, Copy.ai, Writesonic, Jasper, Anyword
  • Updated: October 12, 2026
  • Top pick: Rytr (best for: Marketers who need steady short copy (ads, subject lines, meta descriptions) at no cost)
  • Top pick price as of October 12, 2026: Rytr: Free forever, no card: 10,000 characters a month. Unlimited is $7.50/mo on the yearly plan.
  • 8 tools compared: Rytr, Claude, Gemini, Grammarly, Copy.ai, Writesonic, Jasper, Anyword
  • Claude (best for: Writers who draft longer copy, accept usage caps, and want a general assistant at no cost): Free, with usage capped per five-hour window and no fixed count. Pro $17/mo billed yearly, $20 billed monthly.
  • Gemini (best for: Writers who work in Gmail and Drive and want a free assistant with image and Canvas tools): Free with a Google Account, 15 GB storage. Google AI Plus $4.99/mo gives 2x Free usage.
  • Grammarly (best for: Writers who edit more than they draft and want grammar help plus a small AI prompt allowance): Free: 100 AI prompts a month plus spelling and grammar. Pro: €12/mo billed yearly, priced in euros.

Free AI copywriting tools come in two kinds. Some are general chat assistants with a free tier, and others are writing platforms with a free plan or a trial. The difference that matters is the allowance, because a plan that costs nothing can still stop a campaign halfway through.

A monthly prompt cap and a usage window that resets every five hours are both free to start with, and they behave very differently under deadline pressure.

This page compares eight copywriting tools by their free allowance, what the free tier cannot do, and the cheapest paid step.

It sits beside our general AI copywriting ranking, which covers paid tools in depth. For a single-tool look at one platform, see the Jasper review.

What it is

A free AI copywriting tool produces ad headlines, product descriptions, email lines and landing page sections from a short brief at no cost, within a set allowance. The allowance is the figure to compare: a character cap, a prompt count, a usage window, or a trial length that ends after a week.

How it works

Methodology. We read each vendor's pricing page and its FAQ on 10 October 2026, then recorded four things: the free plan's limits, whether the free plan has an end date, the trial length where there is no free plan, and the cheapest paid price with its billing basis.

Prices are the vendor's own figures in US dollars, except Grammarly, which lists euros only, so we quote it in euros and do not convert it. We did not run the tools.

Where a vendor publishes no count, the table says so instead of estimating one.

Each tool also has a profile on Toolradar: Rytr, Claude, Gemini, Grammarly, Copy.ai, Writesonic, Jasper and Anyword.

Why it matters

Free plans fail on the allowance, not on the price. A free plan with a small prompt cap is a test budget, not a production budget, and a usage window that resets every five hours is a different constraint again.

Three limits decide most cases: a character or prompt cap, a usage window, and a seat count that locks out a team. The same test applies to our free social media schedulers.

Key features to look for

Permanent or temporaryEssential
Rytr, Claude, Gemini and Grammarly keep a free tier with no end date. Writesonic's article writer, Jasper's Pro and Anyword's Starter offer a trial that ends, and Copy.ai lists no free plan on its pricing page.
The cap that bindsEssential
Rytr counts 10,000 characters a month and Grammarly counts 100 AI prompts. Claude and Gemini publish no fixed number, so plan a campaign around the cap you can count in advance.
Who owns the output
Rytr's FAQ says the user or the entity that uses Rytr owns the content, and Jasper's FAQ says you keep full ownership. The other pricing pages state no rights term, so check the terms before client work.
Seats
Copy.ai's Chat plan includes 5 seats, while Jasper Pro and Anyword Starter include one seat each. Claude's Team plan is for 2 to 150 seats.

Pricing

Yearly totals below assume one seat and are the monthly price times 12, except Claude and Copy.ai, which state annual figures. Google AI Plus comes to $59.88 a year, Rytr Unlimited to $90 a year on its yearly plan, and Jasper Pro to $708 a year.

Claude Pro is $200 a year billed up front, and Anyword Starter is $468 a year. Copy.ai's Chat plan costs $288 a year for five seats, which is $4.80 a seat a month, below Jasper's per-seat price.

Copy.ai's team tiers start at $1,000 a month, a large jump for a team that outgrows five seats.

Grammarly's plans page prices Pro only in euros, at €12 a month billed yearly (€144 a year).

We quote it in euros and do not convert it.

Mistakes to avoid
×Stopping at the free price. Grammarly's free tier caps AI use at a small monthly prompt allowance, which suits a test, not a production schedule.
×Treating a trial as a free plan. Writesonic's article writer, Jasper's Pro and Anyword's Starter all end after a trial, and the pricing pages do not promise a free tier afterward.
×Reading a euro price as dollars. Grammarly lists Pro in euros only, so confirm the currency at checkout before you budget.
Expert tips
→Start with Rytr's free plan for short ad, email and meta copy, and track how many characters you use each week before you decide to pay. At 250 characters per ad variant, the monthly allowance covers 40 variants, which is simple division, not a vendor promise.
→For longer drafts, use Claude's free plan in shorter sessions, because the usage window resets on a rolling five-hour basis and one long session can use the allowance before a deadline.
→When one brand voice has to hold across several writers, pay for the tool that stores it. Jasper Pro includes 2 Brand Voices, and Rytr's free plan has no tone matching at all.

The bottom line

Rytr is the pick for short, repeatable copy at no cost, and Claude's free plan is the one to try for longer drafts. Rytr's allowance is fixed and has no end date, so you can plan around it. Claude's free plan has no fixed count, so it suits a drafting session better than a monthly volume target.
