Kit vs Mailchimp (2026): Which Is Better for Creators?

Kit vs Mailchimp in 2026: Kit is free to 10,000 subscribers and Creator is $39/mo, while Mailchimp Free stops at 250 contacts and Essentials is $13/mo.

Kit vs Mailchimp (2026): Which Is Better for Creators?

Kit is the better pick for most creators in 2026, because its free plan holds 10,000 subscribers while Mailchimp Free stops at 250 contacts. Choose Mailchimp when a small list needs long automations cheaply: Standard is $20/mo for the first 12 months at 500 contacts, against $39/mo for Kit Creator, both read on the vendors' pricing pages on 18 October 2026.

That split holds until the list gets large. Past 50,000 contacts the two bills sit close, and the deciding factor becomes what each one counts as a billable contact.

At a glance

Plan Price (USD) Contacts in that price Sends Users Automations
Kit Free $0 Up to 10,000 subscribers Unlimited broadcasts 1 None
Kit Creator $39/mo billed monthly, or $33/mo billed yearly Up to 1,000 Unlimited 2 Unlimited visual automations and sequences
Kit Pro $79/mo billed monthly, or $66/mo billed yearly Up to 1,000 Unlimited Unlimited Same as Creator, plus engagement scoring
Mailchimp Free $0 Up to 250 contacts 500 a month, 250 a day 1 None
Mailchimp Essentials $13/mo for the first 12 months 500 10x your contact limit 3 Flows of up to 4 steps
Mailchimp Standard $20/mo for the first 12 months 500 12x your contact limit 5 Flows of 200 steps
Mailchimp Premium $350/mo for the first 12 months 10,000 15x your contact limit Unlimited Flows of 200 steps

Mailchimp prints only the first-year rate on its pricing page and does not publish the rate that follows, so year two is an unknown you should ask about before you commit. Kit prints its standard rates, and yearly billing on Kit is 12 months for the price of 10. Both vendors offer a 14-day trial on their entry paid plans, and Kit's needs no credit card.

Toolradar data: Toolradar, the software directory we run, tracks 108 email marketing tools as of 18 October 2026, and 57% of them are free, freemium or open source. Mailchimp is one of the 10 tools on its email marketing ranking, while Kit sits in the honorable mentions. That ranking weighs review volume and market attention, not price, so it does not settle this matchup. The side-by-side data lives on Toolradar's Kit vs Mailchimp page.

What the same list costs

Kit wins every list size up to 10,000 if you only send broadcasts, because its free plan covers it. Mailchimp charges from the 251st contact. The comparison gets closer once you need automations, which is where most creators end up within a year.

List size Kit, broadcasts only Kit Creator, monthly Mailchimp
250 Free 1,000 tier, same as below Free (500 sends a month)
500 Free 1,000 tier, the entry price Essentials $13/mo or Standard $20/mo, first 12 months
5,000 Free $89/mo Check the current price on Mailchimp's site
10,000 Free $139/mo Premium $350/mo, first 12 months; check Essentials and Standard on Mailchimp's site
50,000 Creator required $379/mo (55,000 tier) Essentials $385/mo, the plan's top tier
100,000 Creator required $679/mo (105,000 tier) Standard $800/mo, the plan's top tier

At 500 contacts with automations, Mailchimp is cheaper in year one. Standard at its first-year rate comes to $240 for 12 months ($20 times 12), while Kit Creator costs $468 over 12 monthly payments or $390 billed yearly. That is $150 in Mailchimp's favor on the yearly Kit bill, for a plan with 200-step flows and five seats.

At the top of Mailchimp's plans the order flips. At 50,000 contacts Kit Creator's tier is $6 a month under Essentials, and Creator keeps unlimited automations where Essentials stops at four steps. At 100,000 contacts Kit Creator undercuts Mailchimp Standard by $121 a month. The full tier ladder for Kit is in our Kit pricing breakdown, and Mailchimp's is in the Mailchimp pricing guide.

The free plans: 10,000 subscribers vs 250 contacts

The free plan gap is the main reason creators pick Kit. Kit Free covers 10,000 subscribers with unlimited broadcasts, unlimited landing pages and forms, tagging and segmentation, and the ability to sell digital products and paid subscriptions. What it holds back is automation: no visual automations or sequences, one user, and Kit branding stays on.

Mailchimp Free covers 250 contacts and caps sends at 500 a month or 250 a day. That cap means two emails a month to a full free list, so a weekly newsletter breaks it in week three. You also get one seat, one audience, no automation flows, Mailchimp branding, and email support only for the first 30 days.

Sending past the cap is not an option on the free tier. Mailchimp's help center says that a free account over 250 contacts gets a hold on live and test sending until you upgrade or trim the audience. For a creator still finding an audience, Kit Free is the plan you can stay on for a long time. The best free email marketing software roundup covers the other free tiers worth a look.

Automations: where Mailchimp's entry tier runs out

Mailchimp Essentials caps flows at four steps, which fits a short welcome email and a follow-up and rules out a real launch sequence. Standard lifts the cap to 200 steps and adds send-time optimization, dynamic content and multivariate testing, which is why Standard, not Essentials, is the real competitor to Kit Creator.

Kit Creator includes unlimited visual automations and unlimited email sequences, plus polls, RSS campaigns, SMS marketing and Kit's MCP connector for AI assistants. A launch sequence with branches for buyers and non-buyers fits on the entry paid plan. On Mailchimp, the same flow means Standard.

Seats tilt the other way. Kit Creator gives two users and Mailchimp Standard gives five, so a creator with an editor, a designer and a VA gets more logins per dollar on Mailchimp. Kit Pro removes the user limit, but at roughly double the Creator price, which is a steep fee for logins alone.

Selling: Kit is built for products and paid newsletters

Kit's commerce fee is 0.6% plus card processing, and the free plan can already sell digital products and subscriptions. A creator selling a template pack or a paid tier of the newsletter can do it without leaving the email tool.

Kit also ties growth tools to the higher plan. Pro includes a newsletter referral system that Kit values at $99/mo as a SparkLoop plan, deliverability reporting, subscriber engagement scoring, and A/B tests on subject lines and content. Kit is running 25% off the first year of Pro billed yearly, which brings the 1,000-subscriber tier to $593 for that year; the offer ends on 7 November 2026.

Mailchimp's strength sits elsewhere. Its plans add social post scheduling, Google retargeting ads, predictive segmentation and customer lifetime value on Standard and Premium, all aimed at a business with a store or a sales funnel. Billing rules that change the bill

Mailchimp bills unsubscribed contacts. Its help center counts subscribed, unsubscribed and non-subscribed contacts toward the plan limit, and only archived, cleaned and deleted contacts drop out. If a paid account goes over its limit mid-cycle, Mailchimp keeps sending and adds an extra charge to the bill. An old list full of unsubscribes is therefore more expensive on Mailchimp until you archive it.

Kit bills on confirmed subscribers and calls its billing subscriber-centric rather than list-centric, so the number to watch is the confirmed count, not every record ever imported. When the list passes a tier, Kit moves the account up automatically and prorates the difference. Moving down is manual: once the count falls below a tier you switch in the billing settings, and the lower price starts on the next billing date. Annual plans carry a 30-day refund window and no pro-rated refunds after that.

The practical step is the same for both: clean the list before you pick a tier. On Mailchimp, archive old unsubscribes. On Kit, switch down after a cleanup, because the price will not fall by itself.

Who should pick which

Pick Kit when you are a creator building an audience, your list is under 10,000 and you mostly send broadcasts, or you sell digital products and paid subscriptions. Free covers the first two cases, and Creator adds the sequences once a welcome series or a launch needs one. The Kit review goes deeper on the plan limits.

Pick Mailchimp Standard when a list under 1,000 needs long automations and five seats in year one, and you can plan for a renewal rate the page does not print. Mailchimp also fits a small business that wants social scheduling and retargeting ads in the same tool. The Mailchimp review covers its plans in full, and the Mailchimp alternatives list covers the cheaper senders if neither fits.

Pick neither when the newsletter itself is the business and you want an ad network built in. The beehiiv vs Kit comparison covers that buyer, and the newsletter platforms ranking sets the wider field side by side. If cost is the only factor, the Mailchimp vs MailerLite comparison and the email marketing software roundup list cheaper paid tiers.

Our own disclosure: MarketingShot and the other Dupple newsletters are sent on beehiiv, so neither Kit nor Mailchimp is the tool behind this site.

How we compared

This is a price and plan-limit comparison built from first-party pages. We read Kit's pricing page, Kit Commerce and Kit's billing guide, then Mailchimp's pricing page, its compare-plans table and its pricing help article, all in US dollars on 18 October 2026.

No account was opened and no campaign was sent for this page. Prices move often, Mailchimp's year-two rate is not printed, and Kit's Pro discount is time-limited, so re-check both pages before you buy.

FAQ

Is Kit or Mailchimp better for creators in 2026?

Kit is better for most creators in 2026. Its free plan holds 10,000 subscribers with unlimited broadcasts and digital product sales, while Mailchimp Free stops at 250 contacts and 500 sends a month. Mailchimp wins only when a small list needs 200-step automations and five seats at the lowest first-year price.

How much does Kit cost compared with Mailchimp?

Kit Creator is $39 a month billed monthly at up to 1,000 subscribers, or $390 a year billed yearly. Mailchimp Essentials is $13 a month and Standard $20 a month at 500 contacts, both first-12-month rates. At 100,000 contacts, Kit Creator is $679 a month against $800 for Mailchimp Standard.

Is Kit's free plan really free up to 10,000 subscribers?

Yes. Kit's free plan has no charge up to 10,000 subscribers and includes unlimited broadcasts, landing pages and forms, plus digital product sales with a 0.6% commerce fee on top of card processing. It does not include automations or sequences, it allows one user, and Kit branding stays on your emails.

Does Mailchimp charge for unsubscribed contacts?

Yes. Mailchimp counts subscribed, unsubscribed and non-subscribed contacts toward your plan limit, and only archived, cleaned or deleted contacts are excluded. Kit bills on confirmed subscribers instead, so the count that matters there is the people who confirmed, not every record in the account.

Which has better automations, Kit or Mailchimp?

Kit Creator includes unlimited visual automations and sequences on its entry paid plan. Mailchimp Essentials caps flows at four steps, and you need Standard or Premium for 200-step flows. Mailchimp Free and Kit Free include no automations.

Can I move from Mailchimp to Kit?

Yes. Kit lists free migrations on its pricing page, and a list under 10,000 subscribers can move onto the free plan if you only send broadcasts. Archive unsubscribed contacts in Mailchimp before you export, so the import reflects the people you actually mail.
