Most email tools were built for marketers who send campaigns, then had newsletter features added later. beehiiv was built the other way round, by people from the Morning Brew team who had already grown a newsletter to millions of readers and knew exactly which tools they had been missing.

That origin shows in what ships by default: a referral program, a recommendation network, an ad marketplace and paid subscriptions, all in the base product. This review covers where that focus pays off and where it costs you.

beehiiv is a newsletter publishing platform founded in 2021 that combines an email service provider, a website builder and a monetisation suite.

You write and send issues, host an archive and landing pages on your own domain, grow through its recommendation network and referral program, and earn through its ad network, paid subscriptions, digital products or a sponsorship storefront.

In 2026 it also covers podcasts, community and email automations, which pushes it from newsletter tool toward publishing platform.

You create a publication, connect a custom domain and import your list. The editor is a clean block-based writer with segmentation, A/B testing on subject lines and scheduled sends.

Growth runs on two engines: the recommendation network, where other publications recommend yours at signup, and the referral program, where readers earn rewards for bringing friends.

Monetisation is equally built in: opt into the ad network and beehiiv matches sponsors to your audience and handles billing, or turn on paid subscriptions and keep 100 percent of the revenue minus Stripe fees. Analytics report opens, clicks, growth sources and revenue per subscriber in one place.

beehiiv publishes dollar prices for Launch, Scale and Max, and Enterprise is a custom quote above 100,000 subscribers. Substack is free to publish, then takes a percentage of paid subscription revenue plus payment processing.

Kit and MailerLite start with a free plan for a limited subscriber count (MailerLite also limits monthly sends), then paid tiers that scale with list size. Ghost(Pro) hosted plans scale with subscriber count, and self-hosting is free under the MIT licence.

The cheapest credible entry for a newsletter you intend to monetise is Scale, because Launch withholds the ad network, paid subscriptions and automations.

Costs jump at Max, which adds unlimited seats, 10 publications and the send API, then again on Enterprise, while Kit climbs with list size and a Substack publication earning $10,000 a month pays more than beehiiv's flat fee.

beehiiv is the right choice for anyone building a newsletter as a business, from a solo writer who wants sponsorship revenue at 2,000 subscribers to a media company running ten publications. It is particularly strong for creators who want growth mechanics without engineering them.

It is the wrong choice if your email is a channel for a product rather than the product itself: ecommerce stores needing cart abandonment flows, SaaS companies needing behavioural lifecycle email, or anyone whose automation requirements run deeper than a welcome sequence. Those needs belong with a dedicated ESP.
