Reddit will make logged-out readers sign in LINK
- Reddit will end 20 years of open reading and shift the site to a mainly logged-in experience, chief executive Steve Huffman said today, in a post published hours before the company's quarterly earnings call.
- Huffman gave four reasons, user experience, the ads business, safety rules and protecting Reddit's data, and said the first tests will run in select markets outside the US in the coming months, with no countries or start date named.
- The change touches Reddit's largest group: logged-out visitors reached 77.7 million daily uniques in the second quarter against 52.6 million logged-in, though Huffman said the front page, shared posts and pages reached from search will stay open.
YouTube's dynamic thumbnails will route impressions to your best image LINK
- YouTube's upcoming dynamic thumbnails will steer impressions toward whichever image works best for each audience segment, rather than splitting traffic evenly as the current thumbnail A/B test does, YouTube's Todd Beaupré said on an October 27 "Creator Insider" episode.
- The system starts with some randomness and then uses segment features such as a viewer's location and how much they have watched a channel before, separating newcomers from core fans, with creators able to upload up to three thumbnails.
- Beaupré said the approach lowers the risk creators take when they test a weaker image, because the system will be "smarter and faster" at cutting impressions for options that fail, though YouTube has not given a launch date.
Study reveals AI Overviews slash organic click-throughs sharply LINK
- A small case study by Cyrus Shepard found that Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode deliver an estimated click-through rate of about 0.9% on AI impressions, while opting out sharply cut clicks on regular organic results too.
- Shepard used Google's generative AI opt-out controls to block his site from AI Overviews and AI Mode, then compared impressions and clicks; AI impressions made up about 8% of total impressions and dropped to zero during the test.
- Regular organic clicks fell when AI features were turned off, which Shepard calls a "Search SERP Halo Effect", appearing in more spots, including an AI citation, lifts the chance a user clicks any result on the page.
Discord is opening 63,000 servers to search this year LINK
- Discord will start making conversations in its public "Discoverable Servers" searchable on the open internet, so people can find useful discussions that would otherwise stay buried inside the platform.
- Starting November 16, each of the more than 63,000 Discoverable Servers gets its own web page with automated summaries, and from mid-December selected public messages may show up in search engine results.
- Administrators pick which channels take part and members can opt out, with published messages hiding usernames and avatars; the option is off by default in the EU, UK, Canada, Brazil, Australia, and South Korea, and teens are excluded.
DoorDash's $17B Instacart deal reshapes your retail media bets LINK
- DoorDash has agreed to buy Instacart, taking on a loan of up to $13 billion for the purchase and promising to pay Instacart $1.25 billion if competition regulators block the deal, which it pitched to investors as a win for advertisers.
- The agreement was filed the same day DoorDash reported third-quarter net income of $466 million, up 91% from a year earlier, on sharply higher revenue, with no figure given for its own advertising business.
- For brands that buy DoorDash media, the release named Marketplace GOV growth as the main revenue driver and gave no advertising revenue, advertiser count or growth rate, unlike Instacart, which has reported ad revenue separately.
Strategies & Tactics
> More paid social ads won’t fix a creative problem: Test genuinely different ideas like hooks and angles, not more look-alike ads, so Meta's algorithm has varied signals to optimize against.
> How to test incrementality before peak spending starts: Run holdout tests before the holiday rush, switching off a channel for part of your audience to measure which spending actually drives extra sales.
> The Anatomy of the Best-Performing Onboarding Paywalls: Build onboarding paywalls as three screens, a trial promise, a cancellation reminder, then one yearly offer, since this sequence converts best.
> 3rd-Party Citation Optimization Prioritization in an AI Search Era: A Framework [With Worksheet & Claude Skill]: Prioritize third-party citations by their lasting value and fit with existing marketing work, not quick wins, because the sources AI search tools cite shift constantly by industry and platform.
> Ecommerce Social Media Marketing: What 72 Brands Post and What Works: Build your social strategy around one main network, lead with product-in-use posts, and add community posts and tutorials since most rivals skip them.
> Ad creative fatigue: how to spot CTR decay early: Catch ad fatigue early by tracking each ad's click-through rate against its own launch-week baseline, since rising cost signals confirm it only after spend is wasted.
